Boil Pulsing -PID in Manual Mode

I have a 3 vessel setup with a single PID controller that runs my HLT during my mash then I switch over to manual mode on the PID to run the boil kettle. I've autotuned the PID, using the HLT, and checked the PID temp with my pocket digital thermometer to verify that my PID and trusty...

Show us your sculpture or brew rig

Very nice setup! I stalk craigslist looking for a local deal on some GDM's. I know a upright freezer would do the same but your setup looks that much cooler being able to see everything

Faint odor in Food Grade Bucket

+1 After a good soak, soft sponge scrub, hot and cold water rinse, place the buckets in the sun for a few hours to dry. The combination of heat (maybe not possible yet), wind, and uv light is the cheapest way to help drive off a number of aromas

Bittering Hop amount for Grapefruit Blonde

In a 5.5 gal batch (so 6 gal into fermenter) with a total grain bill of 8.75lbs, 17 IBUs, and 0.25oz coriander seed (5mins), I made two separate tangerine zest additions: 0.5oz @ 5mins and 0.5oz @ flameout. For my "Zesty Wit" I used a grain bill of 8.5lbs, 19 IBUs, and two separate zest...

    Pouring onto yeast cake

I came across this article/experiment in another thread about trub in the fermenter. Good read and I'm no longer concerned with trub making its ways to my fermenter http://brulosophy.com/2014/06/02/the-great-trub-exbeeriment-results-are-in/

    Red Beet Beer

Actually, I love the flavor (but I love red beets). My wife enjoys it, but only wants about half a glass before I get to cleanup the rest. I'm excited to see how it ages over the month or two but I'll definitely brew this again

    Red Beet Beer

I was a afraid it would but a simple rinse with hot water and a wipe with the sponge made it look good as new.

    Red Beet Beer

Now after almost two weeks in the bottle the beer is starting to have a better balance of flavor yet provide that earthy or beety aroma I desired. The flavor is citrusy, a little spicy, slightly bitter, and nice earthy or beety tones to round everything out. It sure is fun to pour for friends...

    Super Simple 15G Plastic Conical

Damn! They (RK) changed shippers from fedex to Conway and out the door goes free shipping. $124 to ship a single 15 gal conical three states from the manufacturer to my door is a crime!

    Red Beet Beer

Haha... Damn autocorrect wins again. I wanted to say that the bitterness will FADE a bit with time. Even when you reread a post before making it official, it's funny how your brain still interprets a word as you meant it and not as it is at times.

    Red Beet Beer

I brewed up a farmhouse ale with coriander and fresh cracked black peppercorns. The total batch size was 8.5 gal, 5.5 gal going into a keg and 3 gal getting bottled. The 3 gal batch had 12 oz of red beets added to it after primary was over (approx 10 days in) and the beets stayed in the...

Bittering Hop amount for Grapefruit Blonde

If you don't want to account for the bitterness of the peel (zest and pith), just scrape the zest off with a peeler and leave all the pith behind. All of my wits have either orange, lemon, lime, grapefruit or a combo of the above and I've always had great results with the zest only. I follow...

    ssr trials and tribulations

I had an Auber SSR to start but mis-wired a switch and blew the ssr on the maiden voyage. I replaced the auber with a similarly rated Fotek (2 for 18.50 deal) and had the exact same experience as the OP during my HLT water test. The heat sink got very hot and the ssr never kicked off. After...

    Super Simple 15G Plastic Conical

For those with the 30 gal conicals, what would you say they can actually hold, total volume, not what you would comfortably ferment in them. My 15 gal holds a little over 18 gals (or at least there's room above the 15 gal marking that I've extrapolated to 18.25 gal)
