    Cheapest batch you've ever made?

Since I buy grain and hops in bulk, re-use/wash yeast, and have an all electric brewery, my batches are quite affordable. I recently did a munich SMaSH w/ cluster hops on my stove w/ a heat stick 8.5# munich and 1.5oz cluster and free US-05 is around $6.50 bucks for 5 gallons.

Leaving spent grain in your house...

Id definitely cover and compost to keep the smell down. My dad used to toss his in the garden in big piles. It took FOREVER to break down in one big pile. Work in grass clippings, dead leaves, etc. Mix it often to keep things aerated and it'll make some wonderful compost for your garden...

    Pros and cons

I naturally carb in the keg all the time. The only disadvantage to me is that it takes longer. I do seat the opening on the keg with a hit of co2 first though to avoid the problem Double_D mentioned.

I may be a loner in this lol But I dont like Hoppy beers

I love a nice hoppy beer, but my favorite styles are almost all malt centric. My wife would replace her blood with baltic porter if she could. I don't understand the tooth enamel eating hop bombs either, but to each his/her own!

    Buying grains locally?

Yes. I had to clean it by discarding whatever floated and most of what was left germinated so I'd say i got about 75-80% usable. It converted just fine, just had a higher protein % than my brewing malt so it made a really hazy beer. Ive also done this with wheat and rye with similar results.

    Frozen fruit or fresh fruit?

Where can I find Barley locally?

Feed barley is going to be lower quality than a human consumption version. Ive done this in the past, but I had to clean it up a little as it had other stuff in it. I gave it a soak and tossed whatever floated, and then roasted it in the oven. I have also malted feed barley, but it seemed to...

    Need advise on heating elements

If you have an old PC power cord you could make a 1500-2000 watt version for about $20. http://www.cedarcreeknetworks.com/heatstick.htm There is also a basic brewing podcast about the subject: http://media.libsyn.com/media/basicbrewing/bbr04-29-10electric.mp3 also a link to the...
