    Home brewing blues.

The good thing I found was that after the expense of getting all the equipment, the home brewing blues go away and before you know it, you've got plenty of home brew on hand for cheap.

Score!!! Wort aeration at it's finest.

I know someone that has a home health care business and I did some computer work for them recently. I simply asked and scored a great oxygen setup today. "D" aluminum cylinder and an adjustable regulator from 0.25L/min to 8L/min., free. He said when that the O2 runs out, bring it back and...

    Brewing With Honey (Poll)

I've always heard that honey has natural anti-bacterial properties; might be okay to use post boil without much risk.

    Strange beer allergy

I have an interesting allergy to beer and other alcoholic beverages as well, seems the more I consume my speech begins to slur and I eventually am unable to walk....it's the damnedest thing really. :P Joking aside, allergies are serious stuff an can come on instantly and unforeseen. Much...

    Oldest Keg you have..

Okay, wife and kids are out of the house and I'm into some Evo Primal Pale Ale (didn't have any homebrew cold), and I thought I'd pose the question. How old is your oldest keg? I've got one stamped March 11, 1964....nine years older than me. :D

    Bottle it or toss it?

After bottling my first beer a while back, it seemed WAY to bitter and I thought I had done something wrong. Turned out that I just jumped the gun and never let it age in the bottle. Looks like you bottled it; try it in about 30 days and see what it tastes like.

    When to sanitize bottles?

I use a bottle tree. I typically rinse all the bottles first, then run them through a vinator with starsan and placed on the bottle tree. 45 bottles ready to go and kept throat down until flipped and filled. Works great. I like the other few that have posted on here about they use the...

    Odd flavor in my beer...

A little update here. I waited a bit longer and cracked open another beer tonight (as I type this) and the background flavor I spoke of has all but disappeared. This bottle (hoping it's all the rest) tastes fine. I doubt it would win any awards but it's definitely something that I'll drink...

    So who's brewing this weekend?

I had the day off too. I brewed a AHS Honey Blonde kit I had gotten a while back. Hit the sp. gr. spot on, a first for me. I also used my homemade immersion chiller instead of the plate chiller as I didn't feel like cleaning up the plate chiller and got to use my Blichmann pot. I have to...

    Odd flavor in my beer...

My wife could help me but all I can seem to get out of her is, "..this is bitter." with her nose turned up. I'll see if I can get some friends to help with the flavor description. It just could very well be chlorophenol, introduced from the filter. The water itself, for the brew, was filtered...

    Odd flavor in my beer...

I just can't seem to place the flavor. I could be over powering malt and/or with a slight medicinal "hint", it's just hard to place. I'll see about taking it to my LHBS but that is a good hour drive for me. Guess I'll couple that with a purchase of some sort to "kill 2 birds with 1 stone."...

    Odd flavor in my beer...

Thanks for the replies. I'll sample some more tonight and see if I can pin down the flavor. Wish I had a homebrewer "expert" near me that I could say, "Here, tell me what is wrong with this."

    Odd flavor in my beer...

It's been brewed and bottled. Was brewed in April, primary for 7 days, secondary (better bottle) until August, racked without aeration to a keg, then pushed with CO2 through my homemade filter which is a standard 2½×10 housing with a .35um polyethylene filter. The housing was fastidiously...

    Odd flavor in my beer...

Okay, I've semi-successfully brewed a drinkable beer from all grain but I have an odd flavor in the beer I can't really describe. I've looked at the websites that go through all the off and/or bad flavors but none of them seem to be what I detect in the beer. Could it be a clash with hops...

    Carbonation Question

Those of us who started out wine making find it easier to have patience for beer brewing but even then, I find it hard not to want to get into a batch of beer early even knowing it will be better if I can just wait. LOL I have 15 gallons of beer in kegs that I brewed in April/May that I know...

    Fermentation Temperature

I did my first swamp cooler setup recently and I have to say that it's ghetto but effective. I added to much cooling at one point and my water went down to 58°F and my fermenter temp. was 60, so it definitely does work. After it got up to the mid 60's it was pretty easy to control the temp...

    Brew pot ?

If you are talking about the black/white flecked porcelain coating on most canning pots, it should be perfectly fine for using.

    Swamp Cooler

I have to say, I tried the rope handle 18 gallon tub filled with water (~$7) and just placed the fermenting bucket in it and filled to about the same level with water as wort and have been alternating frozen bottles of water and freezer packs for a few days. It works quite well; crude but...
