    First brew questions

Welcome to the addictive world of home brewing!! :mug: As a newer brewer myself, I know right where you're at. Here's what I've found recently. Mini mash just requires a little more temp control than "boil, add hops, cool..." I chose to mini-mash my second brew, mainly because I wanted to...

    Tasted Beer First Time

Unfinished beer is going to taste rough. I thought my first beer had soured after a week in the primary. I just popped my first bottle last night, 3 days after bottling. It was still rough and not real carbonated, but far more mellow and definitely drinkable. You'll be fine! :mug:

    The worst day of brewing...

... is still better than the best day of work. :mug: (Story) Last week I went to Austin Homebrew Shop and bought more stuff! I wanted to do a secondary fermentation this time, which would mean buying a carboy. Up until now I just had a single plastic fermentor. I went ahead and bought the...

    Light DME for the starter?

Remember, all you're trying to do is increase the amount of yeast by about 4-5x so that when you pitch into your 5gal of wort, you've got a ton of yeast ready to tear it up! You're basically taking away that first day or so of "non-activity" in your primary where the yeast is busy multiplying...

    Choices

I was kicking an idea around that seems like it would work... If your budget affords it, buy a big chest freezer and plug it into a temp regulator. In theory, the freezer should only kick on when the temp is below what you set.. say 60 degrees F. I know a freezer is designed to get temps...

    Sour or just rough?

Okay, so I just racked my first batch into my secondary after a week in a plastic primary. The beer is the German Wheat kit from William's Brewing. My SG was 1.056 at 80 degrees F. My current gravity is 1.022 at 75 degrees F. Is this on target if it spends another 1-2 weeks in the secondary...

Thoughts on homebrewing vs commercial brewing

I'm with you on this one. I just started homebrewing very recently (my first batch was just transfered to my secondary yesterday!!) and I already have dreams of beer brats, beer-battered fish and chips, and taps aplenty. :mug: How cool would that be?

    New brewer question about temperature

I've been kinda kicking this idea around myself after the advice... I wonder if you could find a small solid rubber bung to plug up the spigot... or to attach a small piece of a siphon tube and let it hang out of the container outside the water so that no cooling water gets into the spigot...

    New brewer question about temperature

Thanks for the quick reply... that's what I was afraid of... I'm using a plastic bucket with a spigot that I was given. How does that change things? I think that a 5 gal glass secondary is numero uno on my list of things to buy... but that's not this discussion :) What would be the ideal...

    New brewer question about temperature

Hi all, first post about first beer, and looking for some input. I have my first batch (German Wheat kit from William's Brewing) in my fermentor as we speak... airlock went nuts after and no apparent activity. The question though, is about the temp in my closet. Because of a medical condition...
