Aerating A Waste of Time If Using Dry Yeast?

I will continue to aerate. Surely that can't hurt. Course I've been wrong many times before about things that "couldn't hurt".

Why not make a starter with dry yeast?

I brewed an IPA Saturday and went through the trouble of making a starter with WLP001 and I am pretty sure it was DOA. It wasn't shipped till Friday and arrived on Tuesday. I'm sure 4 days at 110+ degrees wasn't the best of conditions for my poor yeasties. When I cold crashed there wasn't any...

Why not make a starter with dry yeast?

Thanks Revvy. That seems reasonable. I usually subscribe to the "if it's worth doing, it's worth overdoing philosophy" so a yeast starter with dry yeast didn't seem like overkill to me. As long as it wont hurt my precious beer then I think I'll continue with my dry yeast starters.

    What effect will it have?

Why not make a starter with dry yeast?

I've searched the forums and read a lot of different opinions on the subject. The main consensus I have seen is make a starter with liquid, rehydrate only with dry. I realize that dry yeast should already have the cell count you need to ferment a 5 gallon batch, but I haven't read anything...

    DIY Stir Plate. HELP!

When I just used a metal bar as my stir bar I had the same problem. When I got the stirbar (which is a magnet coated in teflon, btw) my problem was solved. They only other thing I could think would be the problem is that your RPMs are too high. I had to add a few resistors inline to slow my...

    My cigar box stir plate

It's absolutely a fair price. Like I said it's the best I've seen. I've even sent a few emails out with the link for my friends who wouldn't take the time to make their own. Just tried the Sierra Nevada Torpedo clone kit you guys have. Brewed it yesterday and I was salivating. I can hardly...

    My cigar box stir plate

Just saw this on Austin Home Brew Supply website. http://www.austinhomebrew.com/product_info.php?products_id=12699 50 bucks is one of the best prices I've seen for a brand new stir plate. Still a bit much since mine cost less than 10, but more reasonable for those out there not inclined to...

    My cigar box stir plate

Thanks. Of all the things on my ever expanding project list this one was definitely more manageable than most. Even considering scavenging time it was much less than an hour total to build. I only used 1 hard drive magnet and it was more than enough to grab the 1 inch stirbar. I tried 2...

    My cigar box stir plate

A video of it in action. I think the lens was fogged up. Very humid today in Louisiana. About a 1 inch vortex on full speed. I think I should use maybe only 150 ohms of resistors instead of the full 200 like I have now. That would probably give me more speed and a bigger vortex.

    My cigar box stir plate

Yeah I saw those project boxes but the guy who own the store I usually buy beer from sells his empty cigar boxes and a I knew he would cut me a deal. I was actually thinking of making one of those guitars actually. Most of my projects are pointless but at least I can claim the stir plate saved...
