PID temp freaking out. Bad cable?

User name checks out. Thanks, HVM! This is very helpful. Will tinker this weekend.

PID temp freaking out. Bad cable?

While brewing last weekend, my Inkbird PID for the HLT started freaking out, with the temp readout jumping up to 600F, back down to 120F, then showing the display for no probe attached (orAL). Helpful video: My initial thought is that it is simply a bad cable. But is there anything else that...

What are you listening to (music!!!) right now? Embarrassing or not... share

I restored an old mono hi-fi console and have been scouring the thrift shops for mono recordings. Not going to lie, Jackie Gleason's lush, easy listening albums have been hitting just right after a busy day at work. The console:

Where did all the home brew stores go?

Join a homebrew club. They will often do group buys. Near Fairfield we've got The Underground Brewers (2nd oldest HB Club in the US!) and Brew Haven.

    My Riptide broke!

I'll jump back in her and just say that I am more than happy with my purchase, even if I had to replace the impeller. As I said early, I was probably man-handling the innards more than necessary. It's fixed and is working just fine. It is still a tremendous improvement over my very loud chugger...

What came in the mail for you today?

This was just a quick test. I'll custom cut a top for it. Nothing on the bottom. Heat rises.

What came in the mail for you today?

Update: the 40W heat wrap did the trick. It brought 5.5 gallons of tap water from 42F to 67F in a few hours and held it steady overnight.

What came in the mail for you today?

Received a 40W heat wrap for my fermenter from Brew Hardware. I had a 20W seedling mat that I wrapped around my 7.5 gallon Brew Bucket, but it wasn't up for the task in my cold basement (maybe I should switch to brewing pilsners in the winter). Hopefully double the wattage will do the trick (I...

What are you listening to (music!!!) right now? Embarrassing or not... share

I've been enjoying the fictional duo "The Coward Brothers" (Elvis Costello and T Bone Burnett). The album is the soundtrack to an Audible play written by EC featuring the pair and Directed by Christopher Guest. I haven't listened to the play yet (looking forward to that), but the music is...

    What did I build today

Hey, I like to show off. I dabble in woodworking and electronics. Here's a pair of speakers I just completed. Cases are painted MDF. The baffles are red oak with a maple accent stripe. I'm not strong on speaker design. I usually find a design for a specific driver and just follow the...

    NB - still working?

A car dealer drove me away for the same reason. I got a good deal on a pickup from a dealer a good half hour drive away. I know they make their money in service, so I chose to have them service the truck, bypassing two closer dealerships and local mechanics. They treated me right... until the...

What I did for beer today

Since it's too cold to actually brew outside, I sat down with my recipes and started plotting out my brews for the coming year. I've been upgrading my system and trying out techniques, which constantly disrupted any semblance of an SOP, and the quality of my output has been all over the place...

What I did for beer today

The reflective bubblewrap comes from Hello Fresh boxes. I've got a stack of them. I cut it to fit around the fermenter, with a heated mat taped to the inside for warming if needed. Condensation hasn't been much of a problem. I'm going to cover the wood base with vinyl.

What I did for beer today

I got a SS Brewtech Brew Bucket fermenter for Christmas. Today I took a drill to the lid and added a temp twister and thermowell. I also used some 4" PVC and a sealed toilet flange for a holder that I can fill with cleaner to let it soak without needing a tall bucket with gallons of cleaner...

What I did for beer today

Washed with TSP and passivated with citric acid my brand new Brew Bucket. It was a Christmas gift from the wife.

    Filling a growler

I use one of these counter pressure fillers to fill bottles (doesn't work with growlers). It connects the same way, and I've never had it pop out.

BYO - no more printed magazines

I've tried, but I can not read online magazines. I end up never reading them. At least my print 'zines I can see the pile and pull one out and finally get around to reading it. I've sent an email requesting a refund on my remaining subscription (almost two years).
