What I did for beer today

Last weekend I re-rebuilt the engine on my '62 Beetle so I can more easily get it out of my way when brewing in the garage. It's not running yet, but it turns over now, which is a lot more than it could do after the first rebuild.

Oh, HECK yeah! Read that back in the 70s. Since then I've ways wanted to rebuild a Bug engine.

This weekend I'll be in the garage with an old friend, taking a second stab at rebuilding the engine on my '62 VW Beetle. Maybe it'll work this time 🤞. Consequently I've had VWs on the brain a lot, so it only made sense to drop the needle (figuratively) on this one.

Follow up... I listened to the Audible play, The True Story of the Coward Brothers, and it was hilarious. Highly recommended. It also gave a lot of context to some of the odd tunes on the soundtrack. As much as I adore Elvis, the tracks I've been playing more often feature T-Bone Burnett's vocals.

Tom Lehrer's passing last week at 97 reminded me that he released all of his recordings to the public domain a few years ago, so I downloaded his albums and have been revisiting his work. If you're a fan of biting satire, grab a copy here.

    Favorite/Worst Cheap Beer?

I've always heard of the Genny screamers (but not the "splats") but never experienced it (drank plenty). I can't imagine what would be different about Genny Cream that would cause a distinctive reaction (other than by over-indulgence). Still, I prefer regular Genny to the the cream ale.

The kind of bar that would have Schlitz on tap is probably not cleaning the tap lines as frequently as they should, so who knows.

    Favorite/Worst Cheap Beer?

I just got back from visiting my son in northern Wisconsin. He is devoted to Hamm's. I had plenty of it while there, and I'll admit that I liked it.

Best names for your beer batch?

Any time I whip up a recipe using what ever I have lying around, I call it "Floor Sweepin's" Ale. Inspiration: multi-bean soup mixes of dried beans. I am convinced that some janitorial employee at a bean-packaging plant asked what to do with all the various beans that spilled on the floor of...

I call my Ballantine IPA clone "My Funny Ballantine" because it 🎼makes me smiiiiile with my heart.🎵 It's 🎵my favorite work of art.🎶 (actually, it's not... it didn't come out too good. Need to try again)

Adding fruit to the secondary... still need a secondary?

So the prevailing wisdom is that a secondary is not necessary, so I've stopped doing it for my standard brews. But now I'm using a recipe that calls for adding fruit during fermentation (hibiscus/mango blonde ale). Specifically, it says to add to the secondary. Can I ignore that and just add it...

    So who's brewing this weekend?

It got up into the 80s here in CT yesterday, so I dragged out the rig (driveway brewer). Brewed up a Hibiscus Mango Blonde Ale. Things did not go smoothly... I had a lot of temp control issues on my eHERMS. The HLT was heating up, but the water in the mash tun was lagging more than...

PID temp freaking out. Bad cable?

Deoxit is great stuff. I use it for restoring vintage radios. So I finally had some time to work on this. pulled out the Deoxit... and it cleared it right up! The connector on the cable at the probe end was a little gunked up. A couple of squirts and all is well.

I've been a big fan of Blotto since the 80s. Saw them live innumerable times. This weekend I attended the premier of a documentary about the band. Got to meet the surviving members. So of course I spent the rest of the weekend listening to their catalogue.
