Expensive mistake #1: Twisted my thermocouple right off.

For those of you that used the copper ring method to ground the elements (technically, to ground the kettle), what is the advantage to using the copper ring versus just attaching the ground to the element base?

Getting ready to drill 4 holes into my SS kettle for all the new parts. Any suggestions on placement (radially and vertically) for these? (1) Out valve (1) Site glass / temp probe assembly (2) 2kW water heater elements Thanks!

And just in case you want to go the stainless route: http://www.buyfittingsonline.com/Fittings/cat364_1.htm You'll want the '1/2" x 1/4" threaded NPT hexagon bushing'. I must caveat that I haven't received the part yet so I can't 100% guarantee it will work, but it looks like exactly...

Thanks, jk. My confusion was that on the plugs I was given, the horizontal prong was on the right; all of the outlets I could find had the horizontal prong on the left. We searched and found some cords that have the prong in the "right" place.

JK, sure enough the network guys had a plenty of 5-20P cords. Have to figure out something new for my outlets, though.

Oops, you're right. I'm still in the build stage, so I haven't used the cords yet. According to this chart, it looks like I should be able to use 14AWG cords?

ddknight, I had the same question. Based on the chart I found here, I'm using some 16AWG cords from some old servers I had (standard computer-type power cables). The chart shows a max of 22A. I'm curious to see what jk's research told him and what he used.

Darn. I just bought the side-inlet pump after debating if the center-inlet would be better or not. Oh well. My chiller is probably 22' and it's definitely a challenge even getting it into the bucket; not sure yet how I'm going to deal with all the connections. I'm trying to use PS quick...

I'm still debating on whether I want to scale this system up for 5 gallons; if I can do it with a single 120V element (2000W), then it's a no brainer. If it's going to require multiple 120V elements or a 240V element, then that makes my decision much harder since it will introduce some...

jkarp, two quick questions on your thermocouple: 1) I only see two "liquid tight" TCs on AuberIns. Are you using the 2" or 4" probe model? 2) What fitting is used between the TC and the siteglass body?

Awesome design! The BYO article led me to finding this thread. I'm definitely going to build one, trying to utilize my existing equipment and possibly converting to 5Gal.
