    A Brewing Water Chemistry Primer

Thanks AJ for the response, it is much appreciated. I definitely plan on getting a meter as soon as the budget allows. I assumed the strips would be (barely) better than nothing. Couldn't get sauermalz at the LHBS so I'll be using Lactic Acid. The hops are fairly light IMO, one addition for 13...

    A Brewing Water Chemistry Primer

I've been a religious user of TH's EZ Water Spreadsheet for several years. I stumbled on this thread because I was having a heck of a time trying to get the calculated mash pH correct for a hefeweizen without using an insane amount of salts. Now that I've read all 22 pages, my (water...

    What Category?

Not sure how great of a fit it is for 17a with having the fruit and brett in it. I'm assuming either 20 or 23, but wanted to get some feedback on what would be the best fit.

    What Category?

I would like to submit a Honey Peach Wheat Sour ale to a contest, but I'm not sure what category. Suggestions?

    BetterBottle Cracks

Arcane: That seems to be what BB thinks as well. These are definitely forming from the inside out. BB currently has info on their site with the same advice you gave regarding adding dissolved PBW. Unfortunately, that info was not in the handling precautions at the time I researched & purchased.

    BetterBottle Cracks

I've never dropped one, or really even handled one roughly, when full. With all of the "special precautions," I'm probably more careful with these than with my glass carboys. I typically don't ever rock the carboys. The BB that cracked after one batch (Image 3) probably did have some rocking as...

    BetterBottle Cracks

Here are pics of the cracks in each of the three BBs. Click on each for a larger picture.

    BetterBottle Cracks

The cracks are not leaking, but look severe enough that I wouldn't trust fermenting in them again. I will try to post some pictures tomorrow.

    BetterBottle Cracks

Anyone else having problems with cracking BetterBottles? I have 3 BetterBottles, 12-18 months old. Two of them have had 5 or 6 batches each, one of them has only been used for 1 batch; all of them are exhibiting stress cracking on the bottom. I thoroughly researched BB here and at their...

Munich Helles BierMunchers “Helles Belles” (Munich Helles, AG)

BM, just wanted to give a big thanks for this recipe. I can not stop drinking this stuff and my wife has requested that it be on tap "all the time." :mug:

    Beersmith erased all the ingredients!?!?!

Search your c: drive for the newopts14.opts file and delete it. BeerSmith will recreate it when it starts and your ingredients will be back. This happens to me if my machine crashes while Beersmith is open.

    NHC 2010, are you entering?

Received my scoresheets today. Got 3rd place (35pts) with the 6B blond ale (BM's Centennial Blond recipe). The same beer scored 42.5 in the Garage Brewer's Society Champion of the Pint competition a couple weeks ago. East region, BTW.

    NHC 2010, are you entering?

For those of us in the East region, I _think_ the judging is next weekend.

    water for German Hefeweizen

Matt, I'm fairly new at water adjustments and still have plenty to learn so I have to ask, why do you want to keep the sulfate & chloride levels lower? I thought it was just the ratio that mattered (as long as they were in the recommended ranges, of course)?

    water for German Hefeweizen

Here's what I used for a Bavarian Hefe last month. It was the best batch of this beer I've ever brewed. You certainly could adjust to the malty side, based on your preference. I started from distilled water. Starting Water (ppm): Ca: 0 Mg: 0 Na: 0 Cl: 0 SO4: 0 HCO3: 0...
