    newb mistake, questions

I'd love to say "thanks, you all nailed it" but this thing was pitched at about 70 and fermented at 66-68 (basement floor) Mash temp overshot a bit (157?) at the very beginning, but was corrected to too-low (149) within a couple minutes (after fully stirring to be sure temp was properly...

    newb mistake, questions

I did a batch of Cream of Three Crops. I didn't use the original recipe because I wasn't doing 11g as BierMuncher did, I used 5gal and followed the suggested recipe of one of the posts in the thread. Target OG was 1.040, I got 1.048 or 1.052... I forget which (might have been 1.052 that I topped...

    Double IPA

1.5+3+2.5+2+4 is 13 friggen ounces of hops. My LHBS sells hops at 3.15/oz. That's nuts.

    made friends with the neighbor---NOT

Well, the crackies around here are pretty harmless. Obviously you've got bigger problems than I could solve... perhaps grenades? Claymores? Could you hit his amp with a mortar?

The reason its hard to save money homebrewing

Also - buy gear that won't wear out like better bottles and buy gear used. In the end you have just as much gear as ever and you can sell it for what you paid.

The reason its hard to save money homebrewing

I read these threads constantly and as a resident of Ontario the answer is always simple - homebrew is cheaper. Period. A 24 of coors light cost me 38 dollars last weekend. The idea of buying 24 guiness makes me think about my mortgage payments. There are 300ml bottles of craft brew for 4.00...

    made friends with the neighbor---NOT

The problems of Americans always seem to amuse me. More-so the proposed solutions, really. Get a machete? A gun? brew a batch of beer to celebrate after you've shot him and the "meat wagon" takes him away? LoL. You all crack me up.

Coopers Pilsner special questions and modifications

Step one: don't do anything Step two: check watch Step three: if watch has not incremented by 72 hours since first check, go back to step 1. I'm not a "big" fan of coopers kits, but they certainly make beer. You seem to have an interest in optimizing, which is good, but force yourself to be...

Filling sanke keg. Need advice please!

I always just removed the tube, siphoned the beer into the sanke and put it together and carbed it up... why would you want to do something else? I'm thinking if you put the beer in the gas-in port you're going to be spraying it into the keg. I think that yooper's method of transfering from...

What kind of thermometer do you use?

Great feedback and my slacking... er... research at work so far today is very much inline with all of these needs. A separate standalone reciever with multiple channels is a perfectly reasonable addon and could be built for a perfectly reasonable price and sold seperately. All the parts...

    Insulate Keezer Collar, or Not?

http://www.energysavers.gov/your_home/designing_remodeling/index.cfm/mytopic=10170 R value per inch of wood is 1.4 for softwood, 0.7 for hardwood. R value of typical insulation is 3per inch.

    Insulate Keezer Collar, or Not?

well... why not? I'd be most concerned about the air gaps, but then insulation is next and you'll save a significant amount of electricity.

    Legality of kegging

erm, i think the key words are "retailers" and "retail sale". I take the meaning of "beer keg" to be a keg of beer. The breakfast table isn't moved out of the room and replaced with a dinner table at dinner time, its the same table. My point is, a corny keg with beer in it is a beer keg. But...

What kind of thermometer do you use?

How interested would you all be in battery powered thermometer that you can read via smartphone/blackberry/laptop with bluetooth, that will fit inside a carboy? Either a gumball floating model, or a pen-shaped model with the sesor in a boyant end and weights in the other end to suspend the...

Buying returned bottles from Beer Store in Ontario?

Don't bother. Call up a restaurant that you know serves a pop-top beer (ie, half the bars in this province seem to have Corona Night for some reason). Tell them you'll pick up the corona cases and pay them a premium on what they'd get for the empties. Perhaps the value of as many cases you need...

    Bottle sanitizing and drying alternatives?

diy bottle tree: 4x4 trunk, plywood stand, 3/8 dowel, 3/8 drill, glue, hammer, paint - you can figure it out from there. If you have a dishwasher, you could probably just use the racks as drying racks. Spray it with sanitizer and you're good to go.
