What does your SWMBO think of your brewing hobby(lifestyle for some of you)

My wife egged me into the hobby over the course of a few years. When I finally bit the bullet she remained supportive and willfully ignorant of the costs of the operations. She can and will drink as much as me and we have right similar tastes. She has been known to sneak a few bottles behind my...

Have you ever seen 80 Bottles of Pliny?

My local craft stores seem to be unable to get this stuff so the picture doesn't really strike me as I've never had it. I will be in San Diego in April, though and I think I need to make an effort to seek this one out based on the rave reviews HBT gives it.

    Worst Part About Homebrewing

I accept cleaning and sanitizing as part and parcel of the hobby. I can't think of those aspects as being anything more or less negative than actually brewing. Waiting for a beer to condition can get tiresome. I tend to make big beers. This leads into my actual entry to this question. Being...

Raleigh Area Group Grain Buy-Round 4

It needs 2 grain bags with a big ole sausage laid between them. Maybe some beer foam from behind rising over the top middle portion.

I am the only one that doesn't like it

Try pulling a green beer from your conditioning box and open it for a few friends. They will have favorable reviews while all you can do is taste band-aids. Knowing how fermentation works and having a clear expectation for your beer means you will either be completely enthralled or back to the...

    Original gravity too low? 1.022

I think broadbill is on the right line of thinking. I'd pull out some software and try to find the correct OG and volume of supplementary wort to hit or nearly hit the intended OG. Apologies for not knowing a direct and easy method for doing this off the top of my head.

2010 -2011 Bells Hopslam is it out yet?

Last year I determined the per customer limits of each known Hop Slam outlet and then commissioned friends and family to make the purchases for me. I ended up with 6 cases of the stuff. It lasted less than 8 weeks. It cost an arm and a leg, too. I didn't regret it one bit, though.

Groupon Today for Nashville/Middle TN Brewers

Good to know. I always swing by the Flying Saucer when I'm in town so this should be right around the corner. Never hurts to visit a RHBS when the opportunity arises.:off:

How do you transfer the cooled wort to primary?

I pour straight from kettle to fermenter splashing as much as possible without making a mess. I don't filter anything out and it all makes it in. Great beer results. KISS

Groupon Today for Nashville/Middle TN Brewers

I haven't lived in Nashville for several years but I recall All Seasons as being rather overpriced. It seems this groupon should serve to make their prices in line with their competition. Are these guys still located in the Green Hills shopping area? If so, it's their lease rates and influx of...

Using Gravity Readings To Determine When To Transfer To Secondary

When bulk aging a big beer (OG 1.090+) what theoretical maximum time on the primary would you suggest? Why does a bigger beer have to move to secondary for bulk aging? I don't make a distinction between primary/secondary in terms of being able to brew more/another beer. So, what reason would I...

    No specialty grains with LME?

I would suggest a small amount (8oz) of Crystal 40 malt for color, body and head retention. Also, I'm not sure how late you are planning the addition of ME but you'll want it AFTER your 15 minute hop addition. I'd consider moving the 1st hop addition up to the 30 or 20 minute mark.

Black Chocolate Stout - Heaven in a glass

Just for the record, BBCS has an abv of 10.0% so that recipe isn't too much of a clone at 8.4%, imo.

    Sweetwater Happy Ending

I recently tried this beer and I feel like they did a disservice to the beer to put licorice in it. It seems perfectly fine except for the licorice. I don't have any recipe tips for you except to omit the licorice unless you really like that being in there.

Planning out my next brew equipment purchases...

I'd invest in the yeast starting kit first. This will actually increase your knowledge, appreciation and skill base. Also it puts you in a position to craft bigger or more complex beers as well as harvest and yeast instead of buying new for every batch. If you have some DIY in your blood then...

    Bottling and sanitaion

Star San, diluted according to the label is safe for skin contact and for ingestion. The sanitizer works while wet. Do not fear the foam. I put beer in bottles that are full of foam from being sanitized with Star San with no ill effects. Allegedly the constituents are food for the yeast. Star...

What is the big deal about Belgian Beers?

The important thing to keep in mind is that Belgian beer, like most any style of beer represents a long and colorful history and culture. Without it the beer world is less rich and diverse and wonderful. Beerlanthropists I should hope we all are. Even if we turn up our nose at a beer we have to...

2010 -2011 Bells Hopslam is it out yet?

Hop Slam doesn't last long at my Total Wine but somehow the Whole Foods evade detection for a surprisingly long time. What I meant to say was Total Wine and Whole Foods both stock Hop Slam for at least 3 states' radius from me.

    RIS recipe -- thoughts?

The "you" was figurative for anyone else reading the thread. Apologies for not having anything further to add, I just wanted to clarify for the innocents like myself who might wander in.
