    Cold towards the end...

Cold crashing is often used to clarify beer immediately before bottling. I would try to make the transfer to the bottling bucket an inside sport just to reduce the possibility of infection due to exposure to outdoor air. Granted, indoor air is often of lower quality than outdoor air and this...

Raleigh Area Group Grain Buy-Round 4

Depending on delivery date and time I might be able to make the trip just for the meet and drink.

I could see you R and DW but you totally failed to HAHB.

    Broken thermometer in beer

Finish the beer, bottle it up and send it to me. :)

What is the big deal about Belgian Beers?

I used to really dig Belgian (esp Trappist) beer then my tastes changed. I can still drink Orval and blue Chimay as well as a few Allagash brews that escape me (Black and Four are def good). I also like the Victory Golden Monkey. The rest have devolved to yeast bombs for me. I will still try...

    RIS recipe -- thoughts?

Well, since I had to look it up, MattTimBell assumes you know that RIS = Russian Imperial Stout.

Say hello to my new AG brewhouse

Also, I would consider adding a short parapet around the platforms to prevent the burners from slipping over the edge. Failing that I would securely fasten the burners to their respective decks.

Say hello to my new AG brewhouse

Why is the spacer necessary to attach the central platform to the horizontal spars? It seems to me the vertical supports could attach directly to exterior frame in the same fashion as the 2 decks on the outside. You would get better rigidity and support to omit the spacers but I'm betting there...

    Faucet to garden-hose adapter

Yes, he made an in line pre-chiller (post-pre-chiller actually) on the spot. Ingenious and helps me rethink how I am going to approach the same issue in my kitchen.

2010 -2011 Bells Hopslam is it out yet?

IME this year's Hop Slam is disappointing. It seems to be distinctly lacking the floral bouquet of previous years. The bouquet was an important aspect of that beer. It's still great but is not nearly as good as the previous years. So far I've had a couple of 6ers, a mini keg and a tapped full...

Raleigh Area Group Grain Buy-Round 4

Is anyone involved in or near the Piedmont Triad area (WS, Greensboro, High Point)? I might be interested in participating but I may have to have someone hold my share until I can get to the Raleigh area or meet someone in the PT area. I generally visit Raleigh every couple of months as I have...

Founders Red Rye clone or similar(extract)

There are recipes and then there is the recipe database. The database is ostensibly comprised of recipes that have been made and found tasty on more than one or so occasions. Typically, there are other people who have satisfactorily reproduced the recipe. Recipes/Ingredients is more of a...

    Airlock bubbling over

My standard operating procedure is to airlock until bubbling begins then switch to a blow off for 24-36 hours then switch back to airlock. The crazy activity has always been down within 24-36 hours and I've had to clean too many soiled airlocks and floors to ever not use a blow off at the...

    Oxygen in the primary fermentor

Relax, CO2 is considerably heavier than air. Assuming a moderate head space the small amount of air that may have been pulled in should be riding on a cloud of CO2 and not on your beer. If fermentation continues to off gas CO2 the oxygenated air will be pushed out 1st. Otherwise, keep everything...

Gromet in my Pale Ale, any thoughts.

I find that if I dig my fingernail into the grommet it does not rotate with the airlock as I push it in or pull out while rotating. This is all that is necessary to keep the grommet from moving vertically with the airlock.

Mashing Chocolate (The food, not the malt)

Excellent choice. I was cruising through this thread just to see if I needed to make the recommendation and I see I do not. The only other bar chocolate I would even consider is from Olive and Sinclair out of Nashville. Yeah, the price is high but you are absolutely getting what you paid for...

    My First IPA: Please Critique

I would definitely break up the same weight of hops on the recipe over time frames that start at 20 minutes and work towards zero. If you can spare the attention during the boil I find it best to continuously add throughout the final 20 minutes.

How to make a yeast starter - Pictorial

I would suspect there is sufficient sugar in the starter wort to offset dilution and decanting is a superb idea for 5gal and under batches.
