Buying into a top-notch brewing system: Build me a setup for $3K

Epic footprint for a 3 vessel system you say? My entire setup takes up 43" of space in my basement and that's with two 20 Gallon kettles and a 15 gal MT. The control panel is on a TV mount that I can swing in when I'm not brewing. I would hardly say that is an epic foot print. This wasn't all...

    Water treatment.....or not

I always go for that old dish rag taste...is this not the correct way? ;)

    Chugger pump question

I'm surprised you all had to add priming vents to your setup, those are generally used for a closed liquid system. I just open up the valve on the other end where the outlet is connected to then open the valve on the kettle the inlet is connected to and the wort/water drains right into the pump...

    Star San / Oxidation/ IO-star / no rinse

I keg but when I use my bottling wand (racking cane jammed into a picnic faucet and a #1 drilled stopper) I generally fill to the top and let foam (starsan or foam from the beer) bleed out past the rubber topper by pressing on the side of the rubber stopper. What's left in the bottle is just...

Still making bad beer after 30+ batches.

One more thing to add: Adjust your water For Ca, etc in your HLT. Adjust your Ph directly in your Mash after 10 min of mashing in.

Still making bad beer after 30+ batches.

+1. You can't just use a program to tell you what to add to your water without actually testing your water. Just throwing stuff in without testing it first, you could be making it worse. If you're getting your RO water from a controlled source, ask them what the water tests are on it. If you...

Still making bad beer after 30+ batches.

using 5.2 is really used to bring Ph levels down and keep it around that number. If you're using RO, you may need to build up to raise the Ph. Also, don't forget, your grain bill will affect Ph as well once water is added to the grains. My water Ph is around 7 but once I add it to my grain and...

Still making bad beer after 30+ batches.

    1. Purchase a new fermenter (bucket, better bottle, etc) they are cheap enough. If you have the funds, pick up a Speidel fermenter, these are my favorite fermenters, have very high user ratings, and I used to use them all the time before moving over to a stainless steel conical, I still have my...

    Chugger pump question

i just checked Chuggers website and they said that even facing down is good: DO NOT RUN THE PUMP DRY! - The Chugger Pump is not self-priming. It needs to be mounted below the source of liquid and the pump head needs to be flooded prior to turning the pump on. - You can rotate...

Best Kettle for the Money (10-15 gal size)

Second here for Spike kettles. I had their 10 gallon then upgraded up to their 20 gallon kettles. Welds are top notch and they have standard "off the shelf" kettles and they will also custom make any type of kettle you want and weld any fittings on them. Their new kettles have a bottom that is...

    Co2 regulator help!!

Yup, just wrench it off and yes...you need to tape it. Use some yellow teflon tape, it's a bit thicker than the plain white teflon. What's probably on there now is a pipe dope, made with teflon but in a "liquid" form.

    help improving 60% efficiency

That's why when i built my MT I made a bottom draining one, no dead space at all. BTW, are we talking Brew House efficiency?

    Chugger pump question

Not at all. I have the valve on the outlet side throttling the flow and it never looses prime and works perfectly. The only thing I can think of is you have the orientation of your pump head wrong. Face the inlet up so that the kettles drain into the head once you open the valves then turn...

    Chugger pump question

Which way are you pumping? Inlet is the one that forms "P" to the center. Also, rotate your heads to either go side to side or with the inlet facing up. You can do that by removing the screws on the pump head and rotating it, don't worry, you won't mess anythign up and the head is magnet...

Need a second opinion: kegging advice

I agree, go with the 3 gallon setup. That way if you want to move up to the 5 gallon setup, or even add a 5 gallon keg to the setup, all the parts will fit with no adapters.

    Stainlessbrewing.com 1/2" HERMS coil??

I don't have it but I would advise you to wait until you get the coil before you drill anything. Measure twice cut once.....or in this case, drill once. Stainlessbrewing even advises that on their page where they sell the coils..

My first RIMS tube and stand!

Thermal paste is one option but the other culprit is the wort does cool down a bit when leaving the MT through the hose going to the RIMS tube PLUS temps within the Grain bed fluctuate quite a bit depending on the depth you go with the temp probe. Measure from near the middle then towards the...

My first RIMS tube and stand!

Very nice job! Two things I would recommend: 1. Verify the Current rating of that temp controller that it can actually handle the heating element that it's driving, compare the current requirements for the element and the temp controller. 2. Stain the stand and/or clear coat it to protect...

What are you using for weldless bulkheads and dip tube

Make sure you don't have any leaks on the inside of the kettle between the dip tube and bulkhead. It might sound silly but you have to teflon tape everything (except for the compression fittings) inside and out of the kettle. Think of it as a straw, if the straw you're using has a hole in it...

    Help with basement brewery pre-design

If you're main sewer lines are below your house, you can tie right into it with the proper traps. If your sewer lines are above (usually hanging midway or a little higher on the concrete basement wall) then you would install a sealed Pit that will contain a raw sewage pump (that way grains...
