    The World Cup Approacheth

when are your 'football' players going to remove the padding and start playing rugby as it should be played?:p as for the group stage, on paper, england top but as is the nature of these tournaments, anything can happen, and as i've been an england fan all my life i've seen numerous times just...

    band heater rims

yeah, just to maintain temps during the mash and perhaps raise to mashout temps if it has the grunt,i'm not too bothered about efficiency as none of the other pipework on my system is insulated. i was googling these to find out some more info and it turns out you can get them in huge...

    Confused about preboil gravity

this is normal, the first runnings will be crammed with sugars and have a high sg and towards the end of the sparge you'll have most of the sugars out thus the low sg. to get a true reading you have to mix all this up as the the high sg wort is denser and hangs out on the bottom of the kettle...

    Adding body to your brews?

what temp do you mash at? mashing at higher in the mash temp range increases body and mouthfeel, i think also adding carapils, carahell, flaked barley and flaked wheat can also help, there may be more options,i'm still learning about various malts/adjuncts as well

does a decoction generally increase efficiency?

i agree it seems unrealistic i just can't figure where i've gone wrong, i use beeralchemy for my calculations,i was aiming for 40ltrs of 1051 and got 42 ltrs of 1061 with just over 8kg of grain i think my volume measurements would need to be out by about 7 ltrs to account for it or a couple...

does a decoction generally increase efficiency?

i meant after th whole mash was finished, pre and post boil i'm not sure how i achieved this figure then? if the beer turns out to be a winner i may make it again and see if i find a problem!

    WTF went wrong?

are you comparing pre-boil and post boil by any chance? any dough balls when you emptied the grain out?

does a decoction generally increase efficiency?

i apparently hit 96% efficiency today with my first decoction, i normally hover between 80-85%, i don't really believe the figures and i'm thinking i must have screwed up somewhere, i double checked my readings as it seemed high early on and they were good, maybe i added more grain without...

    Permanently Installed Immersion Chiller?

+1, i'm pretty sure the copper is good for the yeast,i was doing the same thing as you are describing but it seemed to create 2 zones because of the location of the heating element, a centre boiling zone, and a zone around the outside of the the chiller that wasn't boiling,i'm sure there was...

    decoction question?

yes, the malt does come from a small local maltster, its mentioned on a new zealand beer website that its not very well modified and needs acid treatment depending on your water, and you also get heaps of protein in the kettle from it. i'm not 100% sure what all that means though. i could...

    decoction question?

i'm brewing an ipa this weekend but pilsner malt is my only base and by all accounts its quite undermodified so i'm going to try a decoction for the first time but do you do the decoction with all malts ie, decoct crystal and munich or add them at the sacc rest? i may add some unmalted...

Critique my Brew Rig plumbing please

yeah, looks ok to me,i use flexible hosing and you have piping and valves to do exactly the same as my flexihose and my system works fine so you should be sweet.i think i'll keep a copy of your design for if i ever go hard plumbed, its a lot simpler than a lot of designs out there!:mug:

Critique my Brew Rig plumbing please

i recirculate to the top one also,i use flexible hosing to return to the top of the grain bed to eliminate splashing, i also use the same for sparging,it creates a gentle meandering whirlpool on top of the grainbed,if you watch the video of sabcos system you'll see what i mean-thats where i...

Critique my Brew Rig plumbing please

are you using the rims to heat your strike water? if not then why the return valve to the hlt? i'm not quite picturing your sight glass configuration,is it to monitor flow or volume? also, what is the 2nd valve on the mt for(the lower one)?
