I'm thinking that you might have priming issues. (using a march or similar). If you locate the inlet of the pump below your kettle, the pump should pump 28" of head no prob.

In the parameter menu, choose parameter "d0". There you can choose Ht or Co. Setpoint you would just change form a cooling value to what you want for heat. I hope this helps.

You should be able to re-program the action of the controller for heat. That way, you can use the outlet for a heater. Just reverse the process for cooling.

That's exactly what's happening. Vessels will have a flow caused by the rising/falling of heating/cooling liquids. Hot and cool spots are typical, unless you re-circulate.

It seems that this set up would be more cumbersome to install; two holes to seal, how to terminate the electrical connections? I have this in my whirlpool tub.. I wonder how this would work as a RIMS/Side stream?

That's exactly the plan for heating the strike water. The second sensor scenario would be when using the HLT with a HX to heat the wort. I have two pumps, Wort and Water.

I'm very comfortable with Silver soldering..As for the drain, it would be just for cleaning in place. I would use a dip tube and side valve for processes. Make any sense?
