Logistics of Home Lager Brewing - Discussion

I pretty much use the 2206 Bavarian. I like it.

Cream Ale Cream of Three Crops (Cream Ale)

    Thanks--I'll check em out.

    German Beer. Holy crap Batman.

Yooper, Onkel_Udo, and iijaki pretty much echo my experience as well. I lived there for two years and have been back a few times since. While there is a nice variety in Germany across the nation, in any one locale you're not going to find very much more than the locally brewed beer. (That's not...

    Why Lager Over Ale

Yeah, who knows if it's true ;) I just read it somewhere. I'm actually kind of a dumba$$.

    Why Lager Over Ale

I'm sure the answer is multifaceted. There's also the greater availability of clear beer glasses starting in the early 19th century which caused consumers to become more aware of the appearance of their beer. Before this, beer was mostly a darker variety served in opaque vessels. It was only the...

    My bad. Sarcasm wasn't obvious.

    Brewing with Walnut Wood

I don't think I'd take that advice. I'm a hobby woodworker too, and several wood species are classified as toxic and/or carcinogenic. Better safe than sorry when it comes to ingesting unknown substances.

    Anyone ever read this book/series?

I've got a bunch of the classic styles series. IMO they are more useful after you've already learned the basics and want to explore the nuances and tweak the recipe of a particular style. As already said, I'd start with How to Brew.

    Grainfather!!

I've got an STC too. The Wilhi is only a single stage. If you have a cooling device plugged into it, you would select the cooling mode. If you plug a heating device into it, you select heating mode. It's ideal for my HLT where I'm only heating, or my lager freezer where I'm only cooling (ambient...

Cream Ale Cream of Three Crops (Cream Ale)

Any suggestions for one that would work well? I'm not sure I have time for gelatin.

    Grainfather!!

This one: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000BDB4UG/?tag=skimlinks_replacement-20 I was wondering about those specs, too. But I have a 8.7cf freezer plugged into the other one, and neither devices have given me any problems (yet), so... There are a LOT of typos in the manual (obviously written by a...

Nope. That's why they put that little ball and spring in there.

Cream Ale Cream of Three Crops (Cream Ale)

Thanks. I guess if they are that picky they can give it away as party favors. I happen to like chewing on yeast rafts ;)

Cream Ale Cream of Three Crops (Cream Ale)

Thinking about brewing this as a gift for a Michelob drinker. Does this throw a lot of yeast when bottle conditioning? I'm not sure how they'll react to large gobs floating around if they aren't used to it. I haven't bottled in 15 years, but I'm not giving them a whole keg :)

    Grainfather!!

I bought it strictly to brew indoors Dec-Feb. Nope, it's my default setup now. It's just too easy and convenient compared to hauling out the pots and burners. You won't be sorry, I think.

    Grainfather!!

Me, too. Credit card gap works great. I've heard it's somewhere in the neighborhood of .032 but never bothered to measure it. One time I cranked it down to the narrowest .025",and my efficiency actually went down.

    Grainfather!!

That's a nice HLT! Good job! I wish I had the cajones to drill my pot but I've never done anything like that.

    Grainfather!!

Congratulations! Six of one, half dozen of the other. The question is, which method would you be more comfortable with? Already a Beersmith user? Go that route. No? Can't beat the app for ease of use. Personally, I found it's simplicity too limiting. All three methods can give you good results...

    Grainfather!!

I arrive at the same result, just slightly differently. The manual recommends an evaporation rate of 8-10% for the calculation. I found that using 8% for a 60 min boil and 10% for a 90 min boil gives me good results. YMMV.

    RO System or Brew Lab?

I think we're talking about two different things. Y'all are taking about ratio of waste to product, and I was talking about effectiveness of the membrane. No doubt there's about a 2-4:1 ratio of waste to product. Cost of doing business, y'all!
