    No oxygen dry hopping

Spike is coming out with a 3-port lid, which is better than the one I have, but still not optimal. I wish they'd included a 2" or 3" port along with the two 1.5" ports. It's easier to dump hops through a larger port, plus greater capacity to begin with. One problem I had with mine was when I...

    Sight glass on Spike Flex

I don't think it's overkill--I wish I had a 4" port for hop dropping. But I need that 4" port for the chilling coil. I wish Spike had some variations on this.

    No oxygen dry hopping

I'm thinking the end cap reducer would be better; by forcing a larger volume through a smaller-diameter hole, I'd think you'd have more chance of the hops jamming.

What's been your game changer for LOB?

At some point I'll try it, and others have had enough success with it that I'm sure it works. I know LOB works--I've produced some amazing beers, I have a local bar that wants to sell my beer, friends who want to pay commercial prices for it. But I'm not licensed and that's that. My only...

    Brewtan-B Experiment and Results

I'm embarrassed to say I left them far long than I had expected to. Here's what I now know about Brewtan-B: it's simply a way to reduce some types of oxidation that come from things like copper. It's part of what I do when I brew, but it's not a miracle-worker. I believe that it helps...

What's been your game changer for LOB?

Really? You want to die on the hill that it's too hard to cool water? I don't know what caused you to get up on the wrong side of the bed today, but I hope it's better for you tomorrow.

What's been your game changer for LOB?

OK, but remember the context in which I wrote that: for a newbie, the fewer variables with which they must contend, the more likely the outcome will be the desired one. Pre-boiling is as foolproof as it can be, which is why--for a first-timer--I think that's the preferred method. You might...

What's been your game changer for LOB?

It may well be....but the preboil is about as foolproof as there is, which is why I did it that way. The more variables you have, the more process steps you have, the more likely SOMETHING will go wrong. At least when starting this LOB thing, simpler, IMO, is better.

What's been your game changer for LOB?

If you want to try something that may have a significant influence such that you can see at least partially what LOB will do for you: When I started, I did what I considered to be the easiest thing: preboil (and then cool to strike temp) the strike water; carefully put crushed grain in pot and...
