Just searching those two terms shows me that I have much more research to do :o
Thanks! At least I was noodling along a similar path :)
It looks like an indirect RIMS setup is just a pump in line with a chamber with a heating element in it? And the HERMS is a similar setup, except that it...
I've been using a 52 quart cooler with a bazooka tube for awhile, which has done pretty well, but I've never been one to leave a good thing alone :p
The plan is to add a heating element and a control unit. I'll probably use a water heater element, most likely one which has a high surface area...
That's what I was thinking...
I couldn't think of a good reason beersmith wanted me to sparge with 1 gallon first. I figured it was smarter than I was though, so I went with it. I'm not sure if it'll end up making a difference, but I think I'm going to start sparging with equal volumes.

Thanks!

I plugged it into beersmith and...
There's really no way of knowing without knowing exactly what the hydrometer reading is (and really your recipe). Different beers finish at vastly different gravities. The important thing is to check several times over a couple days to be sure that it's not still going down. When it remains...
Thanks for the welcome and I have to say this site has been a FANTASTIC resource ever since I found it while researching all grain brewing. I have plans for a keezer coming up soon and an electric boil kettle/HLT later down the road. Eventually I'd love to do an automated setup, as that would...
I've been brewing beer with my father for about a year now, and loved every batch I've made! I recently took the plunge into all grain with a chocolate oatmeal stout, which turned out great. I've got another an all grain wit (from beersmith's standard recipe list) carbing in bottles right now...
