So I just ordered my first wine kit, im a fairly experienced brewer. I found a 5.5 gal new barrel on eBay.
I think I have a basic understanding of the wine making question. My questions are:
Should I primary in a carboy/bucket then secondary in the barrel?
Should I just dump it straight in...
I found this freezer on Craigslist for $75.
It's the perfect size for 3 kegs. It's about 4' 6"
The guy I got it from also gave me a 5 gal glass carbon, a 5 gal bucket and tv treys for free. Good 'ol Homebrew community.
I'm not real familiar with bucket brewing so I can't help you there. As far as the temperature of your beer, it's not uncommon at all for the actual temperature to be 5+ degrees more than ambient. That yeast puts off a lot of heat. Now on to the color of your brew, sit back and watch it I've had...
I made that recipe last year, I also found it a bit bland. Made my own this year and added WAY more spice in the boil and added some more in secondary. Early warm, flat tastings point to a much more interesting brew.
So I've purchased several ounces of Sorachi Ace hopps and have yet to find anything i want to put them in. I figure why not make a Japanese IPA, working title is SamuraIPA.
I planning on doing something simple. Pale malt extract, shoot for around 1.07 OG. Then for the hop adds I wanted to just...
Adding honey during high krausen in the primary will revive your yeast. When you begin fermentation your yeast will work on breaking down the complex sugars in the malt, then when you add the honey (simple sugar) your yeast will be able to break it down easier in the high alcohol environment.
So I've recently read that some people will add highly fermentable sugars, say honey, a few days into primary fermentation right on top of the krausen. The idea is that the yeast has already been working on the more difficult to breakdown sugars and now by adding easily fermented sugars your...
I appreciate the reply. I just ordered some nylon bags.
What about the hop debris that's sitting in the bottom of my carboy? Is this going to cause off or vegetable tastes?
I'll agree, it looks like you've got a solid plan. The only thing I would change, based on personal preference would be to move to secondary for dry hopping and cold crashing.
I've recently changed a lot of things with my brewing process and now I have a few questions.
I just had 2 holes drilled in my brew pot, one for a valve the other for a thermometer. I also got an immersion chiller and a pre-chiller. My whole thought process in doing all of this is to not move...
I just used an immersion chiller for the first time, are there any thoughts on how fast you want the water passing through the chiller?
Do you open the hose up all the way or do you pinch it back a bit. I got into an argument with one of my brew buddies about this.
I'm using a pre-chiller, I...

Wow, I am jealous of all of you that get to live in Fort Collins.
It was an interesting 3 day trip, I'm pretty sure we made all of the breweries. I really enjoyed Funkwerks (the belgian IPA is delicious), Odell and Equinox.
Sorry if i almost hit any of you on my bike.
