White clumps around top of stainless fermenter

Thanks everyone for the thorough replies. Thought I'd give an update since I finally had a free keg to transfer this beer into. Those little white clumps grew a little more, and there looked to be a milky film on the surface of the beer. It was hard to capture with pictures, but I still posted...

White clumps around top of stainless fermenter

I usually move the fermenter down into my crawl space after pitching, so I'm sure it's possible that things are getting sloshed around in the process. It's weird, though, since those little things have never appeared on my glass or PET fermenters, just on the stainless. If that's what it is...

White clumps around top of stainless fermenter

I'm using a Grainfather system, so wort gets pumped through the counterflow chiller and into the fermenter. I put the lid on, shake for about a minute to aerate the wort, then I either pitch my liquid starter into it or sprinkle the dry yeast onto it and seal it up.

White clumps around top of stainless fermenter

Hey all! Despite cleaning it thoroughly, I've now had two brews with my Anvil fermenter that have had this growth in the attached picture around the top. I haven't been able to find any pictures that look like mine, so I'm wondering if anyone else has seen this before. Whatever it is doesn't...

    Only 1 package of S-23

Hey all, I currently have what I had hoped would be a lager boiling away. I just took my Saflager S-23 out of the fridge and realized that it suggests 2 packets for a 5 gallon batch. Whoops. Here's the other yeast I currently have on hand: Nottingham (1x11g) Safale US-05 (1x11.5g)...

Mixed Star San too strong...pitch the beer?

Yeah, I assumed it wouldn't actually be harmful, but I don't want to drink it without having a few people reassure me first. Still, if I had to go, that wouldn't be the worst way. Death by beer. Mmmmm... I actually just got a reply from Five Star, in case anyone does something this dumb in...

Mixed Star San too strong...pitch the beer?

I've avoided posting this thread because I feel really stupid having to admit to this mistake... I misread the directions for my first attempt at using Star San and added one ounce to ONE gallon of water instead of FIVE. I then sprayed the inside of my bottles with the solution using a...

Much lower than expected O.G. after batch sparge

So if I'm getting really low gravity readings from my runnings, how do I correct for that before the boil?

Much lower than expected O.G. after batch sparge

OK, thanks. Can the crush really make that much of a difference in O.G.? And can you see anything wrong with my procedures?

Much lower than expected O.G. after batch sparge

It was the LHBS; they used the same crusher they've used every other time I've bought grains from them.

Much lower than expected O.G. after batch sparge

Hello everyone, This is my first post on here; hoping that one of you fine folks can find my error. I started a Christmas brew the night before last and was WAY off on my O.G. I used the same batch sparge process with my last brew and it worked perfectly, so trying to figure out what went...
