Any hunters reload their own ammo?

Glad to be of assisstance. I hope you and your family have a Merry Christmas.

How important is clear beer to you?

Gavin, I am not sure your analogy holds up. I'll gladly eat delicious bbq off of a paper plate, I do not need fancy china. Maybe my chocolate chips cookies don't all have the same ratio of cookie to chips and aren't perfectly circular... that's fine. If I am cooking in a competition then yes I...

Any hunters reload their own ammo?

Honestly, buying the kit is a great start, but yes eventually if your dad really gets into it, he will likely wish to purchase a hand primer and a different scale, ect. Think of it like homebrewing, you bought him the get started kit, he liked it, now he wants a better brewpot, a better...

How important is clear beer to you?

I use irish moss in any beer that is not a stout or porter. It costs next to nothing so no big deal, while I would love for my beers to turn out crystal clear, honestly if they taste good I do not care.

    BIAB Question

I agree with most of the posts above. I pull my grains after my mash time 60-90 minutes depending, then sparge with 1-1.5 gallons 170 degree water.

    Recipe advice

Thought I would post a follow up here. This having been my first saison I am not sure if the rye was too much or if I just do not like saison yeast characteristics. It certainly had that rye spice flavor that I like but it was very very dry. The spice from the saison yeast along with the rye and...

Thanks again Yoop, my thoughts exactly on the crystal 40. Cheers!

And madscientist451 wins the prize for inadvertently pointing out the flaw in my plan! I had hoped to not have to go to my local LHS and buy anything, but considering I have zero yeast on hand... I'll pick up some steeping grains while I am there. Thanks all.

    Opinions/Advice

Thanks Yooper, I had not decided on that just yet, but your suggestion is what I will go with. So do you think this will taste like beer rather than hop tea? I am not totally against steeping some grains, but it would defeat the purpose in a way.

    Opinions/Advice

Thanks for the response Antony. This is a 2.5 gallon batch with 1oz cascade. My calculations show around 48ibu and gravity about 5.2%. I am just concerned that the pilsner malt extract is going to impart almost no flavor. I have never used it by itself before only in partial mashes to boost abv.

    Opinions/Advice

So I will not be brewing for a while and currently have a 3lb bag of Pilsner dme and 1oz of cascade. I was thinking of doing a 2.5 gallon batch to use this up. My question is, will the pilsner dme add enough malt flavor that this will taste like beer, or am I going to essentially end up with an...

Worst Commercial Beer You've Ever Had?

Thanks for the explanations, I basically just didn't want to say, left hand and have people bitching that it wasn't a "commercial" brew. Looks like I got the bitching anyway. Lol, but good to know the definitions. I do appreciate it.

Worst Commercial Beer You've Ever Had?

Well when I think "commercial" I think anhueser-busch, coors brewing company, ect. Left Hand is supposedly a craft brew company.

Worst Commercial Beer You've Ever Had?

Not really commercial, but Left Hand's 400lb Monkey, which is supposed to be an english IPA is truly repulsive, and no where near similar to an english IPA.

Big Mouth Bubbler-Plastic - Any Good?

Yes, just screw the lid off and put the sanitized hydrometer right in there.
