    Brewing a watermelon ale today

I haven't posted in a while so I thought I would share what I'm doing right now. I'm brewing a blond ale extract recipe. After it's done fermenting, I will let it sit on top of about 10 lbs of watermelon in the secondary. I sure hope it turns out! Anyone tried brewing a watermelon ale without...

Fruit in the secondary and cold crashing question

I've got a belgian wit that's in the secondary fermentor with some oranges aging in it. Normally I would keep it at around 68 degrees or so and let it age at that temperature until kegging, which would be 4 weeks. I'm wondering if I aged it for the same length of time but began to cold crash it...

Should've used A light DME, doh!

I made a yeast starter tonight for a cranberry belgian wit beer for the upcoming holidays. 2 cups of water & 1/2 cup DME. As I was chilling it after the boil I realized, by the dark color, I used a dark DME instead of a light. I figure (hope!) 2 cups of a dark starter probably won't have any...

    My beer body seems thin

The clone recipe I used came from a doc. that I downloaded from the societyofbarleyengineers.org. My OG wasn't as high as theirs, I think I was only at 1.050 & 1.048 the second time. My FO was 1.014 and I forgot to measure the second batch. I sort of wondered if it was an all grain versus...

    My beer body seems thin

Okay, I didn't intentionally mean to mislead with this thread title but after reading it aloud I can see that it probably is misleading, sorry! I have brewed a Moose Drool Brown Ale clone twice (same extract recipe both times) and, to me, the body of the beer seems thin. I pretty...

Fruit Flys AND larva in primary

Yes, this sounds exactly like what happened to me.

Fruit Flys AND larva in primary

Justintoxicated - Good advice! I will give a foam stopper a try. I'm using a rubber stopper that never seems to fit properly, thanks!

Fruit Flys AND larva in primary

12 flies on the side of the primary probably equals 40 in the brew. 3 larva maggots crawling on the inside top lid probably means 2 hundred drowned in the brew. Maybe I could call it Blonde Larvae Lager? :ban:

Fruit Flys AND larva in primary

jbaysurfer - Yes, I did clean like a MoFo tonight :rockin:. I grabbed some bottled beers and got in the cleaning zone, hope I got it all. I'm using plastic buckets but I don't have any scratches, at least that I can see in them, so I should be good for my batch. Two ways the flies could've...

Fruit Flys AND larva in primary

Well, this is the worst that's happened in my brewing history (which is only 1 year old). Tonight I went to transfer a Blonde Ale that's been in the primary for 1 month into a secondary and, while I was racking into the secondary, I noticed something moving on the lid from the primary. Then...

Gnat in my starter, I still pitched it

Thanks Dad (couldn't resist saying that!) and thanks to everyone else for their replies. I'm feeling much better about my batch and will keep it. I opened up the fermentor to see if anything funny was growing today but it looked normal with a nice krausen and a wonderful aroma. I suppose i will...

Gnat in my starter, I still pitched it

I keep hoping that the gnat got boiled so I would be ok but now I don't think that's the case. We don't have gnats in the house but my wife says she does see them in a house plant she has in the kitchen, right near where I cooled the starter wort uncovered. Hopefully the yeast that I got going...

Gnat in my starter, I still pitched it

I created a starter 2 days before brew day. Right away I noticed a black chunk swirling around and around in the beaker as the stir plate did it's thing and I assumed it was something that was in the DME or even from the yeast bottle (WLP002). I didn't give it any more thought after that. I just...
