Six year old homebrew... not terrible

In late fall of 2006 I had a handful of my lab mates over for a "beer brewing party" while in grad school at the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities. Each person got a 6 pack for their efforts, I believe it was an oatmeal stout. 18 months later we were sending off one of those lab mates to new...

    Transplanters Anonymous

Hi, my name is Bucky and I am a transplanter... So anyway, I was searching old threads for what to do with transplanting since I am moving on June 1. There were all kinds of advice, do it, don't do it, cut all the bines and throw away the season, use 3-indole butyric acid, use maunre, dont...

Cascade and Golding Crowns need new owners (South Central Wisconsin)

Hi, I am in the Madison area, which is a pretty short shot down to Janesville. I have cascade, but I would be interested in the Golding, if you haven't given it away yet. Let me know how to get a hold of these guys. Cheers, UWbucky.

    Holy Rhizome

Well, this is my lesson in patience and a lesson for those that can't see below the ground. I planted 3 kinds of hops this summer Cascade, Nugget and Centennial. The Cascade and Nugget 'blew up' so to speak and shot up tall, and I even harvested 2 wet pounds of cones, between the two (~1.5...

    Hop Growing in Wisconsin

Hey BlackJaque - I am not from The Rapids, but I have spent a lot of time in Nekoosa, and The WI Rapids area (recreation), and one guess might be super sandy soil. I know that is a very sandy part of the state in the WI River basin, and if you think that might be a potential problem, I might...

    Hop Growing in Wisconsin

Yes, natefrog, just do it. I am a first timer outside the Madison area (very close to Gorst Valley actually), and I bought 'starts' from a neighbor that had established plants. The 'starts' were already established shoots between 3 and 9 inches long with roots and all, dug right out of the...

    Do second harvests happen?

    I like your style, Dude.

    Are my hops ready?

Yes, use 'em! i think that structure looks good and functional...wind is an uncontrollable enemy, but my guys got 35 days of 90+ temps and with enough water they appeared to love it.

    2012 hops harvest

First year 'starts' report. In south central WI, with reported 'extreme drought' conditions (truth be told I watered them everyday) Centennial - 1 hop cone Nugget - Handful of hop cones (maybe 0.5 oz dried if I am lucky) Cascade - 1lb. 10oz. wet harvested! Great haul from these babies, pictures...

    First cascade harvest...wow

That is not true. There is a 70-80% weight loss from water. So if you conservatively have 3 lbs. (48 oz.) you will end up with 10-14 oz. of dried hops.

    Are my hops ready?

Yes powmonster, it seems Cascades are vulnerable to a host of pests. i was fighting off japanese beetles, spider mites and leaf beetle/bugs all season. Not as much hit my nugget. The centennial was only visited by the japanese beetles. Most of my cascades were NOT that elongated, and even when I...

    Can you ID my hops?

That's funny, because my second round of burs on my cascade plants are looking like nugget cones. rounder, fatter, lighter green. my plants are separated by 15 feet...so there is no way they could have...hmmm.

    Are my hops ready?

The tale of two harvests. I posted earlier on 8/17...only 2 days (8/19) later I saw my first yellow/brown hop cone leaves and I thought 'hey, hey harvest time.' So I went out and found very few other cones like that. As I was harvesting I noticed there was not a strong 'hops' smell, more grassy...

    Can you ID my hops?

I am not sure if you need 10 confirmations, but I would agree with the rest...I too am growing both of these varieties and i'd say top cascade, bottom nugget. Cascade smells grassy, and smaller cone.
