My LHBS has a mill for the customers to crush their own grain in the store. I run the grain through it twice. I had 3 BIABs turn out too light based on recipes at 75% efficiency. The LHBS confidently told me to expect ~50% efficiency without a sparge contrary to my expectations of what BIAB...
1) You might struggle to hold mash temp with such a large kettle. Also, it might be tough getting a 2.5 gallon batch in a 4 gallon kettle if you don't plan on sparging. You need to account for grain displacement, grain absorption and boil-off. It might be safer to step it down to a 2 gallon...
I'm looking to make the leap from extract to partial mash. Due to a 5 gal kettle, I'm limited to a partial mash for a 5 gal batch, and I really like the idea of BIAB. I've been tinkering around with brewtoad trying to put together a milk stout recipe, and I'm not sure if the software properly...
I called my LHBS when i ran into (what i thought was a) snag, and he give me the lowdown on fermentation and bottling. Luckily, that "snag" occurred because if i had followed the kit, I would have been bottling by day 5 and drinking it by day 19.
I brewed an American Cream Ale kit from brewer's best about 6 weeks ago. I tried my first one today. I was shooting for a beer that was drinkable, but this beer turned out more than drinkable; it is freaking delicious. Consider me hooked!
Well, my brew buddy got impatient and dumped it all into the primary, so we stuck with it in. I guess I will remove the peels when racking to my secondary, but I don't know if this will do anything.
Yeah, I used my dishwasher to clean and dry my bottles for my first batch, and like you, my ice bath did the job. My kit was very limited; I was using a long paint stirrer from home depot to stir because I didn't have a long enough spoon. So, at this point I am looking for the little things...
Okay, so i have my list and I am ready to make an order. This forum has a long list of sites to use. Whats the general consensus on the best site for equipment?
Nice! I'm compiling a list now. Also, as far as the bottle rinsing faucet attachment goes, can i just dunk the bottles in sanitizer and/or oxyclean instead?
I will still be sticking to 5 gal batches extract brewing for a while. I have so far...
6.5-gallon Plastic Fermenter and Lid
6.5-gallon Bottling Bucket
Airlock
#2 drilled Rubber Stopper
Racking Tube
Bottle Filler
Five feet of Flexible Tubing
Hydrometer...
I want to break away from using ingredient kits, and have heard good things about this software. I've been monkeying around with the trial version of the software trying to see if I can whip up my own simple extract recipe. After adding all the ingredients to the recipe (in the software), I...
Lots of options it seems. A couple of you referenced Beersmith to figure out the appropriate amount of ingredients. I downloaded the trial version and was a little lost. I'll tinker around with it again after work, and hopefully I'll fully understand it soon.
Revvy, that is the exact kind of info I was looking for! First time poster on this forum here, and you all have exceeded my expectations. Thanks so much!
