    Batch Sparge Temperature

Thanks again for the additional replies guys! Although I know that there can be many factors, I am placing most of the blame on the lower efficiency on the fact that I only ended up doing one sparge and then secondly the sparge temperature. Next time I will be somewhat less concerned with...

    Batch Sparge Temperature

Just got done doing my first AG yesterday, went reasonably well, up until the batch sparge. I had 13.25 lbs of grain, mashed in with 16.5 qts at 171 degrees. The grain bed was measuring 156 degrees initially, so I stirred it around till it came into my target 154. This held perfectly for 60...

    First AG Double Check

Thanks guys! Hehe, yes the 1.25 gallons was a typo. :) Two sparges? So should I split the 4.97 gallon single sparge in two? I'm figuring the initial mash in volume is fixed by the 1.25 quarts/lb. I aimed somewhat high on my grain bill already just in case. If I hit 75% it will be a 6%...

    First AG Double Check

Got a week off coming up and I plan on taking a day to do my first AG. So I wanted to run my recipe by you guys on the forum to make sure I'm on the right track. It is going to be an American IPA in a 6 gallon batch. I am using a 10 gallon round rubbermaid cooler(stainless braid) as a MLT...

    AHS Stone IPA Clone Question

According to beersmith(at least with me at the controls) it says doing a partial boil(3 gallons) and adding the extract at the last 15 mins of the boil will give me an IBU of 71. Is there some other adjustment than that, that I should be considering???

    AHS Stone IPA Clone Question

Having never done a PM before I really have no info on what the best method for efficiency would be, was wondering what the general opinion was. But I'm thinking I just need to pick one and start some experimenting:) mhot55, It was your thread I was mentioning above. Glad to hear it...

    AHS Stone IPA Clone Question

This weekend I plan on making my first partial mash recipe using Austin Homebrew's Stone IPA - Mini Mash and I have a couple questions I would really appreciate help with. First off the directions call for soaking/steeping the grains in 2.5 gallons of water at 155 degrees for 45 mins and then...

    Simple Way to Check Efficiency?

Thanks for the tips. This weekend will be my first attempt at partial-mash along with quite a few new tricks I picked up off of this forum to give a try.

    Simple Way to Check Efficiency?

I think I get it, thank you very much for that reply. So being someone that is about to do his first partial mash this weekend, I should focus on that efficiency within the grain to help prepare myself for all-grain. Is 75% still a good target for the grain portion of a partial mash recipe or...

    Simple Way to Check Efficiency?

I apologize for digging up this old thread, but in attempt to learn about "efficiency" in anticipation of switching to AG in the very near future and the simple fact that not understanding it p's me off :D I have been using this thread to help work my way through the calculations to understand...
