I'm in the Houston area... Bought a softener and RO system to remove the chlorine... Before that, the water smelled like a swimming pool.

When my wife and I were dating, I made a table for her apartment. I used several hundred bottle caps (made a "star" design) then grouted between them. Turned out great. I didn't put anything over the caps (resin, plexiglas, etc...) because I liked the texture.

I've used buckets and coolers. Buckets are easier to clean but the coolers regulate the temps and keep ice longer. I go the cooler route now.

The closest LHBS to Galveston (that I know of) is Brewer's Guild. http://www.brewersguild.net/ Defalco's is in Houston, but it's a good hour from Galveston. As far as clubs go... There are the Bay Area Mashtronaughts (closest to Galveston)...
