    What are you drinking now?

The very first bottle of my red ale. This is my first 5 gallon batch. Any doubts I may have had about this as a lifelong hobby are gone forever.

    Pipe smoking, a lost art.

When we go camping we'll do either cigars or pipes as a group. We generally go from Friday through Sunday, and Saturday night is when we'll break out the nice cigars (at least $10 each) or the pipes. As an ex-smoker I was hesitant but I've found that as long as I limit myself to only smoking...

    Elysian Night Owl, bad batch?

Night Owl was very good when I bought it, I enjoyed it a lot more than other pumpkin beers this season. I think you bought a bad batch. Or maybe I bought an abnormally good one?

    What are you drinking now?

Sierra Nevada Tumbler Autumn Brown Ale. This is what I think of when I think of "beer". It's the essence of generic.

    What are you drinking now?

Elysian's The Great Pumpkin Imperial Pumpkin Ale. ****ing delicious.

    What are you drinking now?

Harlot's Harvest Pike Pumpkin Ale, from Pike Place Brewery. First time they've done a fall seasonal. It took a minute to get used to the strong malt flavor, but it's growing on me very fast indeed.

    What are you drinking now?

Diamond Knot Brewing Co. Industrial IPA. At 7.9% ABV I am not at all surprised that alcohol is a fairly prominent flavor. At 80 IBUs the hops are the most notable flavor. Diamond Knot apparently uses Columbus hops. Good times.

    Objectionable Reactions to Homebrewing

All my friends and acquaintances either appreciate craft and homebrew or don't appreciate beer at all. I know maybe three BMC diehards and they know enough to bring their own beer to gatherings if they plan on drinking. Having never been to a Buffalo Wild Wings, I can honestly say I have no...

    Beef in Bourbon Beer?

Make some beef stock with just roasted beef bones and none of the usual mirepoix. I still might add some of the herbs though. Anyway, reduce that down for about half a day and use all of it in your wort. That might give you the beef flavor you're looking for.

    Fruit Flies

Fish them out of the vodka and stick them up with pins outside your brew area as a warning to the rest.

The beer that got you into beer

Mac & Jack's African Amber was the first non-BMC beer I drank and is still the one I ask for first. I've seen some folks on this board talk about how it's overhyped but I don't really think it is. I like other beers fine but Mac & Jack's is like the beer version of the worn t-shirt you can't...

    George Washington's beer

Out of curiosity, what sort of molasses did you use? If it was blackstrap molasses, by far the most widely available molasses around here and the most bitter, I think that stuff may be of relatively recent popularity. I know that it's still used in animal feed. George Washington, being a wealthy...

    What are you drinking now?

Wild Turkey 101. I spent the weekend shouting at people. It was fun, but my throat needs soothing. Whisky!

    What are you drinking now?

Mac & Jack's African Amber. Day 1 of PAXing, party starts in 2 hours. I'm in warm up.

    What are you drinking now?

Water. PAX is on tomorrow, I'm already invited to three parties with open bars. I must prepare for the torment this mortal flesh will receive.
