You don't need to become a chemist, but you really should take the time to learn the basics. At the very least check out the Water Chemistry Primer sticky. No one is going to do the work for you. Good luck!
I've had this problem two separate times on brew day now. I have the "new" pumps with the stamp / direction / brown impeller. Pretty bummed to be having issues with a product specifically made for this use.
It will effect hop utilization if it differs from the suggested amounts. I'd recommend you follow the volumes for your kit. Can you post your recipe? :D
FWIW...You don't want the grain destroyed. You want the husks to remain as intact as possible while exposing the endosperm.
You will most likely get a lot of astringency from the shredded husks.

FYI - I just did this project and you need to cut the flares off the first 1/4" of the pipes as the OP stated. Then standard 1/2" slid over the tube like a glove.
Def glad I didnt pay morebeer extra for the fittings.
