    Another newbie yeast/fermentation question

Three days ago, a friend and I made a belgian ale, OG 1.050, using White Star Belgian liquid yeast. Because it was kind of a last minute thing, we didn't have time to do a starter. Everything during the brewing part went fine, except for the part where my friend accidentally pushed the solid...

    Why is my brew undercarbonated?

Hey everyone. Newbie brewer here. I just finished making my second batch of beer, and it's come out undercarbonated. I opened my first bottle, and got a small hiss (about half of how much a commercial beer hisses), and there's some carbonation. The beer went flat pretty quickly. I'm not...

    First brew: A failure

Yup, I boiled it in order to ensure no contamination and then cooled it before adding to the bottling bucket. Will definitely try stirring gently with racking cane next time. For those of you who do a 1-step fermentation, when you siphon your brew out of the primary, how much liquid do you...

    First brew: A failure

The yeast was a packet of Safale S04 dry yeast. Fermentation went exactly as expected -- Started at expected OG, finished at exactly the expected FG. I seem to have lost my recipe for the moment, but if I'm not mistaken, OG was 1.049 and FG was 1.012ish. So the yeast seems to have been fine...

    First brew: A failure

After bottling, the beers sat for 3 weeks at 70-72 deg F. I rolled a few and waited another 3 weeks, but they're still flat. Also, there's no visible yeast in the bottom of the bottles. Isn't there supposed to be?

    First brew: A failure

Hey everyone -- I made my first batch of homebrew a few months ago, and the results were not quite as expected. I was brewing a batch of mild brown ale from a B3 kit, modified slightly to increase the alcohol level. The brewing day process went well -- no major issues. Put the brew into my...

    Inconsistent Carbonation

Yeah I'd had that thought (and then forgotten it). :) I sanitized my caps using star san. It was my first time using the capper though, so there was definitely a bit of a learning curve. Maybe I didn't get some of those caps on very tight. I bought a bench capper and have not been using...

    Inconsistent Carbonation

Revvy, thanks for the awesome reply. The recipe was for a mild brown that I converted to a northern english brown. Can you point me in the direction of a resource that would teach me how to convert Co2 volume to oz of priming sugar? That's something I'd like to learn how to do, and I...

    Inconsistent Carbonation

Hi all. I brewed up my very first batch of homebrew six weeks ago. I fermented my 5G of brown ale for 3 weeks in a 6 (or 6.5, I forget) gallon carboy -- everything went well. Then it came time to bottle. I boiled 4 oz of corn sugar in some water, poured it into the bottom of my bottling...

    My beer tastes... watery?

I used B3's mild brown recipe kit, and altered it (using Beersmith) by adding 1 pound of dry extract to get the alcohol content up above 4%. According to my hydrometer readings, it should be at about 4.3% alcohol right now, which seems fair for a brown. 1lb light dry extract 5 lbs liquid...

    My beer tastes... watery?

Hi all. I brewed my first batch of beer 2.5 weeks ago, and took a hydrometer sample today to ensure fermentation was done. Original OG: 1.044 Final OG: 1.011 Right where I expected things to be. After taking the hydrometer sample, I had my first taste of homebrew beer -- and it wasn't...

Moving the primary fermenter after fermentation

My first brew has been in the primary for about 2.5 weeks now, and I'm planning to bottle it on Thursday evening. It's spent those 2.5 weeks sitting in a closet in the back of my house. I want to move it to my garage so I can get it up off the ground for siphoning to the bottling bucket, and...

How do low volume boils affect the taste of beer?

As far as I know, the your low volume boil will produce a less bitter beer, because you will get reduced hop utilization due to the high gravity of the wort. When I did a partial boil, I used late-extract addition in order to help offset this. I'm still a noob, so I'm sure someone else will...

How do you pour your beer?

I usually pour the first bit upright to get some foam, then tilt to 45 and fill until the beer is about to spill out of the glass, then finish up the rest upright.

    WORST Non-homebrew you've had!

    Apparently not. :)
