    Pike Tandem clone

I found this BYO recipe as well, and brewed it last month! It was fantastic! I made a few changes after talking to Pike's head brewer, and I also used organic ingredients. Let me know how yours turns out! I plan on brewing this again in a couple weeks.

    OG much lower than expected

Thanks, guys. Another factor is that this is an extract version of an AG recipe I got directly from the brewer at Pike in Seattle. He said my extract version of it should be pretty accurate, but I'm not sure if I should expect the same gravity readings he does since I'm brewing it extract.

    OG much lower than expected

Can poorly mixed-in top-off water affect the finished product in any way, or can I trust the yeast to mix things up?

    OG much lower than expected

I steeped all the grains in 1 gallon of water at 155 degrees the night before and refrigerated the liquid from that. My boil today was about 3 gallons, and after evaporation during the boil I ended up having to top off with 3 gallons to reach 5 gallons. There was also a heck of a lot of...

    OG much lower than expected

Ell, I brewed today. Thanks to advice from many of the fine folks here, it was much more of a success than it would have been (even made my first starter!), but there was one problem that I'm not sure whether or not even IS a problem. The target OG for the recipe was 1.069. I got a 1.055. What...

    Skunked starter

    Thanks, LVBen. Good info, all.

    Skunked starter

Thank you, Golddiggie! And thank you, Revvy! You should be paid as much as you help people out on here!

    Skunked starter

If I decant skunked beer off the starter yeast, will the yeast produce a skunky final product in the main beer? I stupidly placed my starter in a clear glass jug on top of my refrigerator for 5 days. The kitchen is well lit, but no direct sunlight would have reached it. I haven't smelled it...

Adding water to boil to lower temperature?

    Thanks. 69 degrees it is.

    Starter question

It's a organic clone of Pike Brewing's Tandem Ale. I got the recipe from Pike's head brewer.

    Starter question

    Planned OG is 1.068

    Starter question

"Yea, there'll be contamination" or "Yea, the starter will provide enough yeast"?

    Starter question

I made a starter last Friday night with 12 cups of water, 3 cups light DME and a vial of WLP530. I'm pretty sure it's done fermenting, and I plan on putting it in the fridge when I get home from work tonight. I had an insufficient ice bath and it took about 30 minutes to finally get it down to...

Adding water to boil to lower temperature?

Thanks, guys! I think I'll store my water in my fermentation fridge at 75 degrees, then use the wort chiller to bring the wort down to 75 degrees and then rack on top of the water. Seems like a simple solution but it took a while for it to occur to me :-/ My fermentation temp needs to be 69...
