    Still

Would love to talk with you one on one regarding genetically modified yeast. Very interesting.

    Still

Nice post. Glad somebody understands the differences. I would also like to point out that there are multiple differences between the hybrid still designs ie... Liquid management, vapor managment, and cooling management. It would be advantageous to understand the differences. I utilze all three...

    Still

Methanol will vaporize beginning at 71c/160f and ethanol begins to vaporize at78.3c/173f. I would suggest if using a pot still get temp to 77c/170f and wait until it stops coming out of the condenser. Hold that temp for about 10 minutes, then increase to 79-80c/174-175f and you will begin...

    Wine run

Sediment is not always a bad thing. Just take OJ for instance, the pulp will settle to the bottom. But in the case of whether it is gritty, that would be something to strain out. Sort of like re-raking wine to clarify. That pesky little silt that just makes you shudder if you drank it. Your...

5 gallon mash, but low yeild/ poor quality.

Funny thing here is, your calculations are definitely text book. But for a qualified sigar wash, atleast the recipe I've used from day 1, gives me an SG of 1.100 and after fermentation an SG of .990 which tesults in 13.48 ABV. That calls for 1kg per gal. When distilling low ABV's aren't worth...

Activated charcoal filtering - before or after wood aging

In my experience I have resolved to use charcoal/activated carbon in every run through the still when making neutrals and/or whisky/bourbon. I fabricated a filter funnel basket that hangs under my condenser output. I do this for both stripping and spirit runs. I'm assured a pretty clean outcome...

    Wine run

Last nigjt I ran a 2gal batch from a Zinfandell I finished off last month. It came out at 64%/128 proof. I was thinking on doing the same. Please let us know how yours turns out. I'm thinking that you'll get a higher proofing on the second run, and even a higher volume, but I've never tried it...

5 gallon mash, but low yeild/ poor quality.

Not sure where this caculstion comes from, but for 20 years I've never come to that result. Though you are absolutely correct on the waste of cornmeal. As another matter , not converting the starches to sugars before fermentation will actually stress the yeast and lower the potential of any ABV...

    Alternatives to distilling

Molecular sieve - Wikipedia As listed under applications: FDA approval[edit] The U.S. FDA has as of April 1, 2012 approved sodium aluminosilicate for direct contact with consumable items under 21 CFR 182.2727.[10] Prior to this approval Europe had used molecular sieves with pharmaceuticals...

    Alternatives to distilling

Molecular sieve desiccants have a very strong affinity and a high adsorptive capacity for water. At 25°C/10%RH, molecular sieves can adsorb water to approximately 14% of their own weight. Prices do vary from sources and range from $20 -$30 for 5 lbs. The best thing about the is that they can...

    Alternatives to distilling

Granted molecular sieves do not necessarily remove alcohol fractions. Molecular sieve, a porous solid, usually a synthetic or a natural zeolite, that separates particles of molecular dimension. Zeolites are hydrated metal aluminosilicate compounds with well-defined crystalline structures. The...

    Alternatives to distilling

I recently read a thread regarding freeze distillation. It was a 2012 thread, old , yeah, but I couldn't help but find the thread very humorous. Not an attorney, but it reminded me of watching Senate hearings, they squabble over wording and definitions constantly. Anyway, the thread argued the...
