Kegged the beers a 3 days ago and carbonated. Had a couple of friends over while brewing today and pulled out the beer for them to taste. One liked the Belma only, and the other liked the Cascade/Citra one. I like them both, but I think I would have a pint of the C/C and then finish with 3-4 of...
Beersmith calculated the OG to be within the guidelines at 1.056, i think I messed up the mash a little because normally I hit the calculated OG fairly closely.
The additions were at the beginning of boil-2 oz, then at 60 min into boil-2 oz, and at 65 min- 1 oz at flameout/whirlpool. (corrected...
I let the first dry hops sit for four days, now have split the batch into 2.75 gal each, then dry hopped with an additional 1.3 oz of Belma in one and 1.3 oz Cascade into the other.
Here is my tasting notes from the single dry hop to this point:
The plain Belma at this point is very smooth...
With only an on-off, I think you will have problems. I have had a couple of boil overs with my 5500 watt element, and when I shut off the element, the boil stops instantly (and the boil over).
If I didn't have 240 available, I would have used 2 elements (!20v) and had at least one of the...
I got a couple of pounds of Belma hops from Hops Direct, so I'm trying a basic IPA (low ABV so I can drink more) using grains on hand and single hopped with the Belma to decide how best to use these new hops.
Batch size- 6 gal into fermenter.
10# Pils
1# Carahells
1# Wheat malt
0.5# Crystal 60l...
For a heat source I have used wet/dry heating pads wrapped around the carboy and held in place with elastic bands for years. Like this. My shop gets below freezing in winter and I find that set on low, the heating pads have no trouble keeping wort at ale temps in the cooler.
Also one thing...
I am using a 6 in duct (actually a sidewall thimble in place from a wood stove chimney), so a dryer flap won't work.
All the sealing vent caps I have found are really flimsy, light weight, not insulated and don't seal reliably.
I'm resigned to building something that I have to manually open...
Since I live in north eastern Washington state, I am trying to figure out how to block the exhaust duct to keep cold air out when the hood isn't in use.
I would like to know what others in a northern climate have done for this potential energy dump.
Thanks,
Dave
Thanks, that makes sense now. I am just getting all my stuff together to build my box. I bought a 3 pole contactor because I wanted to break all three legs in case there is a incorrectly wired outlet somewhere in my shop that I haven't found yet. Like you, I was suprised on how big the 3 pole...
I have a question on the 3 pole contactor. It looks like the schematic shows only the 2 hots being controlled and the key switch is wired into the third pole. Am I interpreting it correctly? Or is the key switch wired into the control coil?
