    Slow start

Thanks everyone. Checked it this morning and the fermentation seems to be moving along now. Plenty of activity in the airlock. Lots of helpful information here. Learn more every time I brew! When you rehydrate the yeast, is there a specific amount of time and water I should be using for the process?

Well there is a bunch of tiny bubbles in the airlock but no bubbling action like the fermentation I'm used to seeing. I also used us-5

    Slow start

Brewed a pale ale Sunday night and still not much activity in my airlock? All grain pale ale, rehydrated my yeast, pitched and aerated with a paddle at 70 degrees. Currently siting at 69 degrees. Any thoughts? Re-pitch? Shake it a bit? Take a gravity reading? Or wait it out another day or two...

    Step mashing in a cooler

Thanks tgmartin000. I will do that. New to brewing and all grain, but really enjoying the experience (when I can find time).

    Step mashing in a cooler

Ok. Thanks for the input. All of the all grain recipes in that book call for a step mash. Must be his preference. If I were to do a single infusion, how should I determine the mash temp and time? Using software?

    Step mashing in a cooler

The recipe was from the joy of home brewing book. It's the akka lakka pale ale. I used a calculator on tasty brew.com to figure the steps. http://hopville.com/recipe/896867 is a link to the recipe.

    Step mashing in a cooler

I did my first all grain step mash in A cooler yesterday all is going well until my second infusion of boiling water. I started out with a 10.5 lb grain bill and 10.5 qts of water. Mash in at 146 to settle at 133. Then went with 5 qts boiling to raise to 155. All good to this point, then 1 qt...

American Amber Ale Caramel Amber Ale

Thanks hmmm beer. I downloaded beer smith last night and haven't had much time to play around with it yet, but looks pretty sweet at first glance. I built a 10 gallon MT with SS false bottom and a pex sparge arm in the top for fly sparging. Looking forward to trying it out!

American Amber Ale Caramel Amber Ale

Hey everyone. Im new to all grain and hoping to make this my first go at it. What size batch is the ingredient list for? Also, where do you get your strike water temp, volume, and sparge water temp and pre-boil volume? Is everyone using software to get this info? Did not see it in the recipe...

    Hello from Upstate Ny

Just wanted to say Hi and introduce myself. I am quite new to brewing but have the itch to get going on bigger and better things. I have brewing extract beers and partials up to this point but just bought my first 10 gallon cooler for mash tun and hopefully be brewing AG by next week. My...

    False bottom

The information on these forums blows my mind. Awesome. Ok, I am fairly new to brewing and very new to AG. I am preparing to start my equipment procurement and want to make the right purchases as I grow the setup. My plan is two-fold. Build initial mash tun out of ten gallon Rubbermaid. Second...
