    Concrete Egg Fermentation

I was reading about the benefits of fermentation in concrete (see link) http://brookstonbeerbulletin.com/the-incredible-beerable-egg/ and it looks like Hair of the Dog Brewing in CO. has ordered and uses a concrete egg as a fermenter. I was thinking this would be a really cool, and...

    Open Fermentation with Positive Pressure

OK so update Leaving the beer in the fermenter for 2 weeks I have basically made malt vinegar. I'm going to try using this again but only for a few days before racking off to a secondary; basically as soon as primary fermentation is done.

    Open Fermentation with Positive Pressure

Here is a picture of my inspiration from Wicked Weed in Asheville, NC. They allow the saison to open ferment, with an angled mirror over the vessel for viewers to see. The fermenter is kept in a sealed room with positive pressure.

    Open Fermentation with Positive Pressure

The plastic wrap is not completely airtight; getting an airtight seal would require some re-engineering, and duct tape is not forgiving with the plastic. Also I thought that would kinda defeat the purpose since carboys already produce a hypoxic environment. Currently letting the beer sit...

    Open Fermentation with Positive Pressure

So my Open Fermentation Positive Pressure (OFPP) sat unused for a while, but I finally decided to give it a go. I brewed the Moose drool (slobber?) recipe found here on HBT, a 10 gallon batch and pitched two vials of British Ale into it. Set it up in my basement where it's generally cooler...

    Removing Soap Taste

So to clarify we cleaned the kettle about 10 minutes before using it; equipment hadn't been used/cleaned in a while.

    Removing Soap Taste

So I was brewing with my cousin today and he used soap (dishwasher detergent) to clean the kettle. I quickly shouted in protest as I saw him squeeze the bottle, but it was too late. After rinsing out the kettle numerous times we got to brewing. As we poured the cooled wort into the carboy I...

    Open Fermentation with Positive Pressure

I had an idea this morning after reminiscing about a friend's bachelor party in Asheville and a trip to Wicked Weed Brewing. They had a saison fermenting in an open container within a room that had positive pressure, and a mirror angled on top of the vessel for viewers; quite impressive. I...

Help with Compact 3 Tier Brewstand

Added the hard plumbing for gas; spray painted it all gold, wasn't sure if black pipe was galvanized. But really, it just makes it look much more BA. Gonna be firing it up for the first time this weekend!

Help with Compact 3 Tier Brewstand

The burners only stick out about an inch from the frame. I'll be attaching the hard plumbing tonight. I like the elbows idea, they're just tough to find, may need to go check out Lowes.

Help with Compact 3 Tier Brewstand

Close to finished!!! I finished welding and grinding (mostly grinding though), attached the casters, painted, and attached the burners. Now I'm working on the gas side plumbing, and once that's done I'll be ready to brew! I'll be adding on liquid side hard plumbing after using it a few times...

Help with Compact 3 Tier Brewstand

Been a while since I last posted to the thread, so thought I would give everybody (who cares) an update: see pic. Nearing the finishline with welding/grinding. Just need to add a few more diagonal crossbraces and then it's time to paint. Dimensions are fairly close to the sketchup model...

Help with Compact 3 Tier Brewstand

Next I cut the vertical pieces: 4 x 39" and 2 x 22". Will weld those on tomorrow (along with copious amounts of grinding) and fit on the cross-braces as well.

Help with Compact 3 Tier Brewstand

Hey Guys, Finally got some time to work on the stand this weekend, GTA V has been taking over my life a little bit recently. First step was cutting 2 36" pieces and 2 18" pieces with mitered corners. Welded everything together and luckily it stayed square (ish).

Help with Compact 3 Tier Brewstand

Hey Guys, Sorry for the delay in response, between grad school and work it's tough to find time. The length of the rig will be ~37". Approximate dry weight will be around 70 lbs. I picked up 72' of A5130 carbon steel 1.5" x 1.5" square tubing, .083 gauge at BMG Metals in Manassas, VA...
