I've heard moth balls are a deterrent as well.

My horrible, yet functional, brew sculpture

    1) crank up the heat 2) take your time Get into a comfortable position so that you can slowly and calmly swirl your way down the joint. Overlap swirls and go slow enough to make a puddle of melted base metal and filler rod. The puddle will flow towards the arc/heat. So swirl from one...

    secondary for cider?

Following the advice on here regarding not xsfering to 2ndary for cider... I bottled one 5 gal batch after 2-3 weeks in primary and added 5 more gallons of the same musselmen's apple cider into the fermenter with yeast residue and let it go 3-4 months. (just store bought cider and dry beer...

Anyone willing to analyze my water??

I don't know about your water....but Palmer says soft water is good for brewing b/c you can add various salts to change the profile. This lets you match the historic ground water from whatever region you are trying to mimic the predominant beer style. I have well water that has high disolved...

    Sweetening options

There seems to be conflicting opinions on this... Is it "safe" to use ONLY the tablets, wait a day and then back sweeten with sugar. I don't want bottle bombs?

    An Embarassingly Humbling Question...

I use a sanitized barb fitting to get it started. Just barely press into the end of the tubing. Or a short piece of tubing barely over the end of the bottling wand. Your mouth only touches this piece and you pull it away before any beer flows through it. :mug:

    Sweetening options

You can add whatever sweetener you want to the still batch since you're using tablets. Personally, I'm thinking brown sugar disolved in a few pints of apple juice for the batch I have fermenting now. If you use the right amount of tablets and wait for it to work, your added sugar won't...

    Hot water heater closet

Got to think about venting CO if you use gas burners to heat while you're working inside the closet, otherwise it might become a sort of crypt for your corpse. :drunk: Keep it safe! just reread SORRY! monitor the temperature in there while the water heater is running and make sure it doesn't...

    First Time Cider Brewer

If you want sweet and fizzy and want to bottle with basic equipment, don't use death tablets after fermenting...you need the yeast around to carbonate with drops or cornsugar. This limits your backsweetner to nonfermentables, like splenda or something similar. (or perhaps complex sugars...

    First Time Cider Brewer

Yeah, I'm not a fan of "death tablets" or buying enough splenda type products to sweeten 5 gallons. I'm looking to keep it simple and as always: If you make it yourself it will taste great!

    First Time Cider Brewer

I am too about to make my 1st batch of cider...so disregard my opinion! Disclaimer done. There are several recipes on here, Everything I know about cider comes from reading posts on here. Long story short, it seems that the trick to cider is to decide how sweet or dry you want it to taste...

    Yeast Cake Preservation

About how many months can I expect to get out of recycled trub as stated above? Have a 1/3 bottle of wheat smack pack saved in the fridge from primary back in April. Tried to kick it off in the bottle with a starter yesterday but no gas has bubbled through the airlock yet. I just drained...
