I certainly would NOT recommend the practice, but I ignorantly did it on my 2nd batch and it turned out wonderfully.
Of course, this is compared to the first batch which was mediocre.
I have since purchased an auto-siphon and likely just got lucky.
The best advice that I received was this:
The day you bottle: drive to the store and buy two cases of Sam Adams.
Not only will this help keep your hands off of your homebrew, you end up with 48 empty bottles to use.
Would it take longer than the 30-60 minutes mentioned to re-settle?
The crap on the bottom wasn't my concern, it was the time it took for it to settle + the newfound sugar in the fermented beer.
I am bottling my first batch this weekend.
I do not currently have a bottling bucket; I'll be going to the nearest homebrew store in about 3 weeks to get one (gas prices dictate when I make the trip).
It seems that the preferred method of the experienced members of the forum is to use...
I'm a complete n00b but my guess is that you're fine with the honey; your beer will just be a little stronger and may need a little extra time to ferment.
Another quick question.
Mr. Beer's instructions do not include a reboil after their malt extracts are added to the water (a la howtobrew.com.
If I sub the Booster with 1 lb of the dried malt extract, do I need to add the reboil?
In my "inexperienced brewer" mindset, I think you said:
"If you don't know what the hell you're doing, use extra-light dry malt on your first go-around."
Point taken.
I just purchased a Mr. Beer with a second fermenter.
I followed the first batch pretty much to the letter, to ensure that I understand exactly what the hell I'm doing.
My 2nd batch, I'm going to add 1lb of dried malt to the recipe.
This may sound incredibly idiotic, but the homebrew...
