    Re-using Stainless Steel Compression Fittings

I've used a tool like this to remove the ferrules from 1/2" copper pipe (for regular plumbing) - works well for that...

    Mild Steel vs Stainless Steel

You can learn to do anything on your own, just depends on how much work you are willing to put into it (and how easily you can pick stuff up by reading vs demonstration). I TIG'd mine, but that was more a function of having access to a TIG and not a MIG at the time. I hadn't done too much...

    Mild Steel vs Stainless Steel

several years down the road on my mild steel frame....still unpainted, still in good shape. For the most part it's developed a patina and is in pretty good shape. I switched to electric along the way so not dealing with the heat from the flames anymore, but still get plenty spilled on it.

BrewPi@ESP8266, no need of RPI and Arduino.

Cool, got it compiling - but I'm moving of course so everything is now packed up. Will try it out in a few weeks.

BrewPi@ESP8266, no need of RPI and Arduino.

I've run into the same issue and have the referenced library installed. Any luck on it?

Fishies to Fermenting; aquarium chiller fermenter

Depends on which part you're asking about? The insulation should work just fine. The aquarium chiller probably isn't big enough.

    Why no love for bleach?

In general, yeast are tolerant of low pH environments, so acid based sanitizers can be less effective on them. This trait is sometimes used to "wash" yeast slurry of bacteria by adjusting the pH below what the bacteria survive, but not so low to kill the yeast off. Using a varied...

    Why no love for bleach?

Bleach has a place, but you've got to be careful with it as it can degrade equipment if left on to long without dilution or applied to strong. The chlorine will react with metals and some plastics and rubbers. Pinholes and leaks in stainless are often the result of chlorine exposure. Chlorine...

Help with AC wiring for Glycol Chiller

the skinny line coming off the compressor should get hot to the touch assuming the compressor is running and the freon hasn't leaked out. If the compressor is only getting 'warm' to the touch, there probably is little to no gas left in it and it can't build up sufficient pressure to provide...

Grain to Glass When Kegging-What's Your Average Time?

Depends on the beer, but under 10-14 days grain to glass is typical. 3-5 weeks for lagers. I can't hold my conicals below 45 for long periods, so it's better to just get the beer kegged off. If I gelatin them, they do clear up after an additional week, but otherwise, not a lot of change from...

controlling both fridge and freezer separately?

Except for the really high end fridges, here's how they work: There is usually (not always) two knobs to control temp. The knob for the fridge portion contains the "thermostat" and turns the compressor on and off. setting it colder makes the compressor run more. The knob for the freezer...

How much DME makes a batch "partial mash"

Partial Mash is somewhat of an arbitrary term, but in practice is really used to describe an extract beer that gets part of it's fermentables through a mash, usually to use grains that can't be steeped and aren't available in extract form. The process typically only includes enough base grain...

    sour IPA - any experience?

I've got one on tap at home, although the initial try fits more as a Sour APA than IPA. Kettle soured, pH of 3.75 and 40 calc'd IBU, all through whirlpool. Lots of citrus fruit hops and fermented with WLP 644. OG around 1.050, FG about 1.010 I kept the pH and IBU a bit restrained to get a...

DIY glycol chilled plastic conical fermenters

The plastic conical referenced is 16 gallons (and typically filled with about 15) I have worked with the 3 and 7 bbl plastic conicals as well - it's less of an issue there, but still have to be careful how everything is set up.

DIY glycol chilled plastic conical fermenters

it depends on the ratio of volume of glycol in contact with the beer and the volume of beer. If you've got a large coil for the size of batch, then it can have a noticeable effect. On my conical with a 25ft stainless 3/8" coil, I notice that I get about .3 degrees of overshoot. My control...
