Pliny clone - More Beer vs. AHS?

I am drinking the AHS kit right now, which is very good, very close to the original pliny, but I like the kit better!:mug:

    Newb in San Diego

Welcome! I am not far from you in Chula Vista. I am dry hopping a Pliny Clone right now, getting ready to keg it up next weekend.

    So I finally had Pliny!!!

Helloooo People! Even in my limited time home brewing, for the life of me, I don't understand why you don't just brew something of your own that tastes better than Pliny IMO. I don't know, maybe I am just lucky, but my brother and I sat down and compared Pliny to a Pliny clone recipe, a lesser...

Is all dogfish head beer expensive?

I wasn't all that impressed with DFH either, for the prices they charge. I am glad to see people recognize Ballast Poit Brewery in a positive way. When I really want to treat myself, I will buy a six-pack of their Sculpin IPA, the best tasting IPA to date IMHO! Total price out the door after...

    Calling All Hop Heads!

I agree, Pliny is not all that hoppy. Overall, my opinion of it is, it is okay. I figure that anyone into home brewing should be able to beat it. It doesn't tickle my taste buds as much as other hoppy beers. I do have a clone recipe of it that beats it hands down!

    Calling All Hop Heads!

Ruination, very overrated and overpriced for what it is.

    Calling All Hop Heads!

Moyland's Hopsickle is pretty hoppy as far as I remember.

Low Post-Boil Volume / Higher OG Question

The beer was the AHS Pliny Clone. Preboil volume was 6.5 gallons, and the boil time was 90 minutes. I am surprised that the recipe directions didn't seem to account for the longer boil, unless 1.5 gallons boiloff is typical. Maybe my larger 15 gallon pot makes a difference.

Low Post-Boil Volume / Higher OG Question

My post boil volume yesterday for a 5 gallon batch was around 4.5 gallons, and my OG was 1.080, instead of the 1.072 target as listed on my recipe directions. I sparged with the amount of water the recipe instructions called for, so I think the reason for this is because my boil pot is 15...

    Burner Recommendations?

Get him a Blichmann Top Tier Burner, it is all stainless, built like a tank, will last for many years of brewing.

Gave it another taste tonight. Maybe there is hope!

    First Lowsy-Tasting Batch!

I recently brewed the AHS IPA, the kit. Everything went well, but I wasn't happy with the amount of hops in the kit, only because my last two brews were very hoppy IPA's. I wanted to try something different, so I ordered the kit. Being the experimentive type, without without asking for...

    first all grain

My first AG was a big IPA, tasted as good or better than my favorite IPA's, had no problems. Just make sure, whatever you decide to brew, that you have everything layed out ahead of time, stick to the recipe directions, hit all your temps and times, and you should be good. Take the time to...

    Ballast Point Sculpin IPA News

It is now confirmed! I just purchased two six-packs of 12oz Sculpin IPA. I am happy!

Hopsdirect.com; Do they sell simcoe hops?

Sorry, but anyone know if they do? Is it a seasonal thing?
