    Good recipe with no crystal

Thanks for all the advice. I think I will do as you suggest and make a simple APA which will allow me to really get a feel for the Victory. I am thinking something along the lines of EdWort's house pale ale that has the following grain bill and hop schedule: 6.5# Extra Pale LME 1.5# Munich...

    Good recipe with no crystal

I forgot to buy Crystal last time I ordered from my LHBS and won't have time to place another order before my next brew day. I'm quite new to brewing and most recipes I've come across need crystal but I was wondering if any of you had any good recipes that didn't? I'm open to trying any style...

Help with high FG: under-pitched or too many unfermentables?

Thanks. I was afraid that it was the unfermentables and therefore that nothing can be done... Is 1.025 unheard of for a beer? or will it be more passable when carbonated. It is not undrinkable right now just fairly sweet. It's around 50IBU.

Help with high FG: under-pitched or too many unfermentables?

I've got 5 gallons in the fermenter and use a hydrometer to measure gravity. pour from the fermenter spigot into a long thin tube and measure in that.

Help with high FG: under-pitched or too many unfermentables?

Hi, I have a red ale that has been in the primary for 2.5 weeks. OG was 1.070 and it has now been stuck for a week and a half at 1.025 (abt 65% attenuation). I'm wondering what is causing this, I don't think it is temperature as it has been sitting at between 70 and 72F, so too warm if...

    Help with Best Bitter recipe

Brilliant, thanks a lot for your help. I'm going to aim for around the 35IBU mark i think. Hopefully it'll turn out well!

    Help with Best Bitter recipe

Thanks for all your help with this; it is very useful. I think I will go for more fuggles in the flavor and more EKG in the aroma if that makes sense. So: 15min: 1oz Fuggles, 0.5oz EKG Flameout: 0.75oz EKG, 0.25oz Fuggles In terms of total quantity of hops, does 1.5oz at 15 and 1oz at...

    Help with Best Bitter recipe

OK I've been doing some reading and i now grasp the difference between mashing and steeping which i didn't before! I will keep the grains to amber extract and chocolate. Any thoughts on the hop additions?

    Help with Best Bitter recipe

I usually steep the Munich for 30min at 165F in a brew bag. Is this not good? I was thinking of adding Munich just to give a slightly more complex body but do you think it's not right for this recipe? I definitely want some slight floral notes in the flavour so have re-thought the late...

    Help with Best Bitter recipe

Hi, I want to brew an English bitter and am trying to design a recipe based on the limited ingredients I have available. I am fairly new to brewing so I may be way off the mark which is why I would love some feedback/suggestions. I'm looking for something on the higher malt scale with a bit...

Loss of hop flavour after bottling

Ah ok so it's a problem with the recipe, that makes sense. Nevertheless I feel that there was more hop flavour after the boil and out of the fermenter than in the bottle. I was wondering if as a general rule fermenting and carbonation reduced hop aromas a little and if therefore it's a good...

Loss of hop flavour after bottling

and the recipe should read "EKG" for East Kent Golding, not EKF!

Loss of hop flavour after bottling

Hi, So I cracked open a bottle of a batch of pale ale I bottled 6 days ago. Carbonation was good, but it seemed to have lost all the hop aromas and flavors. They were never that strong in the first place, but before bottling it had a nice subtle flavour which now seems completely lost...

Forgot to sanitize my re-hydrated yeast recipient!

Haha, thanks. I love how almost all the answers to our (beginners) panicky questions are relax it'll be fine! It's good to hear!

Forgot to sanitize my re-hydrated yeast recipient!

Thanks for the reassuring words! As a newby I do tend to get quite nervous! That said, I today have thought of another issue with my pitching which I think I do need to solve. My brew is a strong red ale with an OG of 1.070. I pitched only one packet of US-05. What is more, I hydrated it...
