So you think about 12 pounds of honey then? It's about $3.50 a pound here, so... Yea, right about 40 bucks for the honey. Not bad.

Well I'm not dead-set on anything, but a gallon of honey is quite a lot more than I had expected to use for 2-3 gallons of mead. I thought a gallon of honey was enough for 5 gallons.

Well that's why I planned to add the berries to secondary, after much of the fermentation has been completed. I thought that would leave more of the berry sweetness.

Well it will be my first real chance to make mead, so any suggestions? :)

Well I plan to heat the honey to below-boil to kill any bacteria when I am ready to backsweeten.

awesome! got it! thanks a ton. couple more questions real fast. can the lock be disengaged or removed? I totally mangled a cheap little screwdriver opening it. also, can the spear assembly be dismantled for cleaning and to replace the rubber O ring ?

ok got the piece unscrewed and it will only lift A fraction of an inch before one side catches. what now? thanks for the help!

So all I have to do is twist the prong part of the assembly clockwise to unscrew it?

Sorry the picture does suck, new photo coming. There is literally no end of anything in there. There is no gap, no split, no edges or anything. Basically from the two "prongs" that stick out, all the way down to the o-ring, it is nothing but smooth steel. Edit: I think what you were looking at...

Also, mine doesn't seem to have any notches along the inside like all the others I have seen. In case that helps narrow down what the issue is.
