Can I bend an RTD temp probe?

I've never done it but the resistor that makes it work is at the tip so you should be able to bend it further back away from the tip and it should still work but there is a lot of risk there. You could kink/crack the sheath or pinch the wires or damage the resistor if you bend to close to the...

DIY chiller control, can I just use the temp probe?

Most AC's have an auto shut off when the probe gets below a certain temperature. A friend of mine has a walk in ferm chamber which uses and ac with a coolbot for temp control. It actually uses a cartridge heater to tick the ac into thinking it's warmer in the chamber than is it. Site for...

Two step mash, will this work?

I don't think a step mash as you have described is going to dry out the beer. To dry it out try mashing low and long like around 64ºC for at least 90 minutes (you can step it up without negative effects but that won't affect how dry it gets). 62ºC is a bit low but could work given enough time...

Dry Hopping debate: to weight or not to weight

They are fine enough to stop most of the larger particles (the one that clog stuff up) but will let finer particles through. If I had to guess I would say I can reduce the amount of sludge transferred to the keg by about 80-85%. When I do this I make sure I give the carboy a while to settle...

Dry Hopping debate: to weight or not to weight

Anything over 2-3 or so oz of pellets will give you enough hop sludge where you might want to consider straining. IMO bagging hops in a carboy is a PITA. Getting the bag out can be a messy and frustrating endeavor. I use paint strainer bags available at lowes or home depot and, yes, at the...

Dry Hopping debate: to weight or not to weight

The hop mess will settle out in the keg just fine. If you get a ton of hop material into the keg you can clog your posts which is not fun. To prevent this (in the case you're using a ton of hops) you can sanitize and zip tie a strainer bag onto the end of your racking cane. That will stop a good...

Best movies to watch while getting drunk

The worse the movie the better. The Room is a terrible movie that is great to laugh at while drinking. Recently watched The Last Starfighter, again some good laughs at cheese. Any crappy 80's movie will do in a pinch. Don't watch Birdemic, even bombed it is unwatchable.

Filtering out Fruit Puree before bottling

What are you fermenting in? In carboys I usually cold crash fruit beers, put a strainer sack over the end of my auto-siphon and rack off the top of the beer trying to leave any fruit remnants in the carboy.

    Blichmann Washer Sizes

I recently got a used 15g Blichmann boilermaker and it is missing both the valve washer and the brewmometer washer. I can't find any info on the size of the brewmometer washer and the washer I got for the valve (McMaster 98126A754 1-1/8" ID) per the advise from another thread seems too large...

    Leftover Stout Recipe Critique

Thanks for the feedback. I think I will drop the 0.5# C40, reduce the C120 to 0.25# and replace that lost # with more pale to keep the OG. This should almost halve the percentage of crystal. Do you think I should drop the mash temp down to 154º or is this reduction in crystal going to keep me...

    Leftover Stout Recipe Critique

I have quite a few bags of random quantities of grains left over from porter and RIS brews and decided to throw them all into a stout recipe and see what happens. Anyone see any glaring issues with this recipe? Leftover Stout Recipe Type: All Grain Yeast: WY1272 Yeast Starter: yes Batch Size...

OFFICIAL Kate the Great Russian Imperial Stout Clone

Has anyone added brown sugar to this recipe? I came in a tad low at 1.100 (but somehow got a 1.058 porter from the second runnings?) and was thinking of adding 0.5lbs of brown sugar boiled in some left over wort after high krausen mainly to boost yeast activity but also to boost the gravity a...
