Head smells bad, beer tastes OK

The yeast was he WLP001. I'll also avoid smelling it, and let it settle before handing anyone a glass of it, but I wish I know what caused this.

Head smells bad, beer tastes OK

Of course. It's not like I'm going to drink something nasty without making her try it first. Just kidding. I tasted it before she did, and told her I thought the batch was bad and wanted her opinion. She's a good sport.

Head smells bad, beer tastes OK

I clean the lines between each batch but don't always clean the taps. Would dirty lines or taps cause the head to have an off aroma?

Head smells bad, beer tastes OK

About six weeks ago I brewed the "Dirty Water Brown" nut brown recipe in Jamil's "Brewing Classic Styles" book. I'd brewed it once before and was happy with the results, so I decided to do it again. When I went to pour my first glass out of the keg, I noticed an off aroma that was bad enough...

Substituting light DME for English Pale Ale LME?

Thanks for the info. I'm now seeing that my local home brew mart doesn't have any munich extract (dry or liquid) in stock. A google search led me to a thread where Jamil himself said: Munich malt will self convert, so for extract brewers, I'd suggest just doing a mini mash when the...

Substituting light DME for English Pale Ale LME?

I want to brew the West Coast Blaster recipe in "Brewing Classic Styles" and have a question about substituting dried malt extract for the liquid malt extract that the recipe calls for. The recipe calls for English Pale Ale LME and Munich LME. I have a bunch of light DME and am wondering if...

    Questions about first imperial stout

Thanks, Saccharomyces. I guess I'm accustomed to seeing non-big brews bubble once per second for a day or two, then taper off to once every 30-60 seconds a few days after that, so once every four seconds still seems like rapid bubbling to me.

    Questions about first imperial stout

I'm on day 11 and still getting bubbles in the blowoff bucket every 4 seconds. Still no need for concern?

    Questions about first imperial stout

Thanks, snailsongs and ChshreCat. I'm fine with giving it time, just wondered if it's unusual for the fermentation to still be going so vigorously after a week. And thanks for the link on the bottling priming calculator. I do have a scale and can start weighing the sugar, too.

Thanks, Dos Locos. I appreciate your help. Anyone else?

    Questions about first imperial stout

I've been homebrewing for about 9 months. I don't have a secondary, just the primary. For my latest batch, my 7th overall, I made an imperial stout. It's my first stout and, probably more importantly, my first imperial. The recipe called for 11 pounds of light DME plus 2.5 pounds of steeping...

    SimCade Pale Ale

I'm going to try brewing this. I've got a ton of Simcoe hops and want to make a pale ale, so this looks like a good fit. Thanks.

what do you use to make labels?

Just wanna say thanks for all the info in this thread. I'm fixing to make my first labels and this has answered some of my questions and given me some ideas.

    New Labels

Love the art and the overall design. Nicely done. Not a fan of the font. It fits the theme in style and shape, but it's just too hard to read, even at large size. Still, nicely done.
