    Your First Brew

With 20/20 hindsight I don't think my first kit fermented properly. Probably wasn't warm enough.

Apart from ABV, whats the difference between two finished beers with an OG of 1.050 and 1.020

1028 to 1016 My notes only say 'could use more hops' though I thought it reasonable balanced otherwise but the lack of abv was definitely noticeable.

Apart from ABV, whats the difference between two finished beers with an OG of 1.050 and 1.020

    I've just done a low(er) abv beer as follows (nominal 12L batch) 500g Vienna 500g Munich 100g CaraMunich3 50g Flaked barley 30min mash @70C followed by 15 min @ 72C 10g Mittelfrueh 40min 20g Mittelfrueh 10min 10g Mittelfrueh 0min MJ M15 yeast Came out 1.6% abv you can tell there's 'something...

Your experiences with mashing high to brew low abv beer?

From the one bottle I've had so far, I don't think it does. The relative lack of alcohol is noticeable but otherwise it seems reasonably balanced to my tastes. Maybe more by luck than judgement the hopping seems about right to me with enough bitterness & flavour.

Your experiences with mashing high to brew low abv beer?

I've successfully made a few lower abv beers by mashing at 70-72C and then using a lower attenuating yeast eg MJ M15. I've just bottled one that was 35% munich, 35% vienna, 18% carared, 7% caramunich, 3% flaked barley. OG 1028 FG 1016 so 1.6%abv. 45 mins @70C then 10 mins 72C M15 yeast.

    neutral bittering hops

I'd go Admiral, but can you get it over there? (easy here in England).

What is your home brewery's name?

"Ptolemy Tyler's Quarry House Atto-Brewery" One of my very early brews was an attempt at Timothy Taylors Landlord - which spawned "Ptolemy Tyler's Innkeeper" There used to be a "Quarry House" (and a quarry) opposite where I live. Finally it's (possibly) an atto-brewery, like a micro-brewery...

    Advice on brewing low-alcohol (i.e. <3%) beer?

If you feel like going a little off-piste then this is a really interesting article on cold mashing to get a much lower abv
