    Maris otter vs domestic pale

I dig Maris otter, used it for and english barley wine last July.(just now coming into its own) We did a partigyle, capping the mash with dark roasted grains (chocolate malt maybe?) to make a brown ale from the second runnings. This was one of my favorite beers yet to drink. The character...

Talk to me about Vienna malt

Yeah, Vienna is probably my favorite toasted brain, love to use 4-5# in our house ale to replace some crystal/carapils. It has enough diastatic power to convert itself. 100% vienna for vienna lager would be a classic, also consider a mix of vienna and munich for a marzen/ oktoberfest. paul

Holy cow, that must be one big mash tun to hold over 70lbs of grain.

making a arley wine can i make another beer from...

As I've said, I've never made a 3rd runnings beer, so as far as astringency, you may be right, it may matter not a wit. However, by my way of thinking, these 3rd runnings would be better served if they were left into the second. I personnally can't see fermenting 2 1/2 gallons of beer less...

making a arley wine can i make another beer from...

as far as high gravity wort, I would suggest useing a healthy cake (from a lighter beer) of the strain you wish to use or a very high volume starter.

making a arley wine can i make another beer from...

a couple of questions: 1.) what og. and volume are you expecting for the first beer? 2.) are you batch, or fly sparging? 3.) you mention a third runnings beer but not a second; where are you planning to put the second runnings, with the first beer or split between the first and third...

making a arley wine can i make another beer from...

I've done this a few times and it seems to work out pretty well. Depending on what you want out of your second beer, you may wish to cap the mash with crystal or roasted grains to return a bit more flavor and color. You may also want to bump up the fermentables by adding honey,(a nice touch if...

    Mid-Ohio homebrewer check in

Thanks, The roadhouse is one of my default choices for local dining. In my opinion Mansfield/ Ontario/ Lexington is in desperate need of a good Microbrewery. There's nothing much around, beerwise, for 50 + miles.

Thanks for the welcome. Even though I live just minuetes from Snowtrails I don't ski or otherwise go in for many wintersport activities. My other passion (second to brewing) is riding my motorcycle (2000 SV 650).

    Mid-Ohio homebrewer check in

Hi all, I've been brewing about 8 years now. I got into the hobby through my brother, Tim, who started a couple years earlier then stopped when things got too hectic. I missed the fresh samples he used to share with me, so I took up the hobby myself. I initially started with extract...
