    High boiloff rate compensation

Yep, I switched it to 6.5 gallons, brewed it on Saturday. Missed my O.G. by about .01, I'm chalking it up to not quite hitting my sparge temp. Also, I really toned down the heat for the first 30 minutes of the boil and realized I was going to have way too much at the end of 60 minutes, so I...

    High boiloff rate compensation

Ahhhh...gotcha. I'm a bit of a noob to all grain, I must have gotten my wires crossed somewhere. Thanks for clearing it up. Here's my recipe, any suggestions? http://hopville.com/recipe/925814/wood-aged-beer-recipes/super-bowl-bourbon-stout

    High boiloff rate compensation

For my last batch, a rye pale ale, I lost over 4 gallons to boiloff. I am using an 80 quart aluminum kettle with a very wide opening (about 20''). I know this isn't ideal and is a huge part of the problem. I am planning a high gravity stout for this weekend, 2 gallons. To compensate for the...

MillerCoors apparently up to something in WI

I own the Verona Wine Cellar (in Verona, suburb of Madison, WI), we have 10 cooler doors of brew, one of which holds the Miller/Coors swill. I am seriously debating taking it off the shelf and giving it back to the distributor. Upsides are twofold: 1) I can stand up for the craft brewers...

Strike and Sparge Water Temp Questions

AG noob here...first run is Thursday. Paulie's Porter! I'm having a hard time connecting the dots on water temps for sparging. My target mash temp is 154, and will be batch sparging with a home made rig from a 40 qt cooler. I used the brew365 calculator...

    Sparging Equipment Question

My mash tun is a 40 qt converted rectangular cooler, I'm almost convinced that Gott coolers with false bottoms get better results. But, in the interest of saving some cash I went for the old cooler I had laying around. Honestly, the more I think about the this, the more I lean towards either...

    Sparging Equipment Question

I would use high temp tubing which is rated for 175 degrees for the siphon. I'm making a porter, so I'm going for a sparging temp of 151 - 153 degrees. I wonder if the amount of time the tubing is exposed to high temps has an influence on its integrity.

    Sparging Equipment Question

Ok, getting ready for my first AG brew. I will be fly sparging (if for no other good reason than to extend my brew day and have more time to drink beer!) and would rather not spend the money on another kettle for sparge water, although I probably will eventually. My question is: Couldn't I...
