    Diacetyl funk... already kegged

Sounds good. How about the yeast? Anything special I need to do there, or will the shaking stir them up as well as knock the CO2?

    Diacetyl funk... already kegged

So I did not detect the diacetyl in my latest wheat beer until it was already in the keg and carbed (I was overconfident and did not taste at every step - lesson learned). Here is my question, I have unhooked the keg and I am letting it warm to room temp. Since I obviously did not do a long...

    First AG brew!

That's what I figured for the next time around. I did some volume math then measured what I had depth wise to get an idea. I'll be more prepared next time. :)

    First AG brew!

I did my first all-grain batch today and the one thing I did not take into account was how to measure the amount of wort collected after the mash. I did some quick (probably wrong) geometry to venture a guess, but I have to think you all have better ways. :) I have a plain SS 40qt brew pot...

    Fermenter warmer

So after doing some research, there are two kinds of "infrared" heat lamps. The cheaper ones which do cast a visible red glow, and the ones sold in pet stores that are ceramic and cast no visible light. So, the question is in a fermentation situation are they equal? I assume the one with the...

metals and coatings for mash tuns?

I am working on a cooler-based mash tun and I am having trouble finding a certain part, and it leads me to a question. I have been looking for a stainless steel 3/4" washer for the internal side of the bulkhead. All I have been able to find is a zinc coated washer. Is the zinc coating a...

    Copper pipe "safety" question

Actually, I took the dremel cleaning pads to it and ground everything off in no time. Easy as could be.

    Copper pipe "safety" question

Excellent, was going to soak in oxyclean after cutting, but the lacquer thinner is a good idea. Thanks guys,

    Copper pipe "safety" question

I just picked up some copper pipe to build the manifold for my cooler mash tun. The only stuff I could find had product info printed in some sort of very permanent looking blue ink all the way down the pipe. Is this safe to use at higher temperatures when in contact with the mash? I just...

    Fermenter warmer

Hence the "non visible" comment. It's a good question, though. So what would be better? A terrarium heater or the ceramic heat lamp? I am so far out of my element with this stuff....

    Fermenter warmer

The good thing about the ceramic lamps is that they emit infrared heat, so it's a non-visible light source.

    Fermenter warmer

I think I'm going to go the route of the ceramic heat lamp, as I am looking to work with some Belgian yeast strains in the winter... not exactly true seasonal brewing for me huh? ;) Let me ask this though, when I google for these lamps, I only see bulbs. Can I just use a regular light socket...

Need some thoughts and ideas on color...

So... I am in the process of formulating recipes in tribute to all of my close friends. The idea is to make 6 beers that reflect my 6 best friends personalities. The first one I am working on is a blonde ale, except this is to be a "dirty" blonde. Yeah, multiple references. :) Anyway, what...
