    Rinsing with tap water?

Do I desanitize things when I run tap water over them? Like if I want to clean the excess cleanser from my autosiphon can I rinse with unboiled water? Or does tap water leave things sanitary after it dries? What do you guys do? Thanks in advance!

    Explosions Acomin'?

My 22oz bottles full of Hefe were filled Wednesday night. As of this (Friday afternoon) moment they have a small layer of yeast in them approximately two quarters high. That seems awfully fast, does this mean I should expect explosions in my near future?

One mother of a strange sanitization idea.

Okay, so yesterday I put my bottles that had been soaking in Ammonia water (for label removing purposes) into the Dishwasher (with no soap of course) for extra sanitization and Ammonia funk removal. They are still a little wet on the inside, and I am without a drying tree. Suddenly it came to...

    Starter Kits

Great name. (His name is my name too...) Glad to see you're looking into two stage. Although I am new and newbish, I do have a strange piece of advice: when you get your glass carboy, cover it. Many of us forget that beer is vulnerably to light even while fermenting.I just did and am kicking...

Light and the Clear 5G secondary

Light and the Clear 5G secondary

Crap. I just realized my clear glass secondary needs to be kept out of the light. I bottle tomorrow. It's been getting flourescent light from the room it's in, and some indirect daylight through the curtains. Should I pitch the batch? Thanks again for answering question 1,273,005 of my...

A Tricky question regarding when to bottle.

I made a noob mistake, I transferred to secondary before the Krausen was done Krausening. That is, prematurely. I have no idea what this means, and I can not find the answer in any book. My inaugural batch sits in the "Secondary" fermenter. A brown layer of Krausen sits upon it. I don't know...

Racking day: What is this stuff? With pics.

6.5 gallon Carboy, and I was just telling my wife how cheap this hobby is. That's a good idea though. I do like to see what's going on in there, and I do believe I already have Krausen in the secondary, and it's bubbling like mad. Strange. (My last hobby: Guitar playing, which is cheap. But I...

Racking day: What is this stuff? With pics.

Ah, so next time I see the stuff, I should think: Rack later. I did pour the leftovers from the racking into the pint glass. Although if you read the above post carefully, I did not actually drink it. Thanks again DeRoux, this is like the millionth time you've given me useful info. :)

Racking day: What is this stuff? With pics.

Some strange things observed when transferring to the secondary: What is that brown stuff??? This is what was left over after I was done brewing. It tasted awful, and the stuff at the bottom was crunchy! And this is the end result. Looks a little dark for a Hefe, but...

Hefeweizen: When to transfer to secondary/for how long?

I've heard that Weizens take longer to "mature". Does this mean I should leave it in the secondary for longer? The bottles? I am planning on racking to secondary tomorrow, that will be six days in the primary. How long should I leave it in the secondary before I bottle it? Thanks for...

    Bubbling in the Primary

Thanks Sam, I appreciate your care towards my fragile emotional state :) In all seriousness, I need to be told when I am doing something stupid. Ask my wife.

    First batch in the fementer

Congrats on the first batch Patrick, I was in your shoes a few days back, I had the same problem. No bubbles: wth? It turned out I just had too little fluid in my airlock. If it's the three piece type make sure you've got enough to cover the holes at the bottom of the floating part, and that the...

    Custom Bottle Caps?

Do these exist? Do most HBers just use the standard blanks? I thought this would be a great way to mark my beers without labelling them, as I just discovered removing labels sucks.
