    Original Gravity Conundrum

That's a good question. I believe it is calibrated to 68.

    Original Gravity Conundrum

I thought about that too, but I corrected for temp. I've been using a hydrometer for the past 30 beers, with no issues..

    Original Gravity Conundrum

That makes a lot of sense too. The second running entered the kettle rather slowing on top of the first runnings, so they may not have mixed together well. That means my efficiency was crap though...

    Original Gravity Conundrum

Yeah, that's the same numbers I got via a boil off calc, but I'm sure I read my hydrometer right. Maybe it is broken... I've got a refractometer in the mail. Hopefully it will give me the proper reading.

    Original Gravity Conundrum

I just finished brewing an imperial milk stout this weekend and am getting some very perplexing gravity readings. The pre-boil/pot-mash gravity came in at 1.084 (which was pretty close to the BeerSmith estimate) and now the post-boil/OG gravity is 1.082! I had a 2gal boil off starting at 7.5 gal...

Fridgenstein Side-By-Side Kegerator / Fermentation chamber

This is great and exactly what I'm looking to do! Quick question, assuming the fridge doesn't have dual compressors and that the fridge is cooled by air coming in from the freezer, do you have any issues with the fridge (ferm chamber) getting to cold or the freezer (kegerator) getting to...

    Kegging and Beer Cellar

I'm just jumping into the wonderful world of kegging and am making sure I have all of my ducks in a row before my next brew. I obviously need to chill the kegged beer before enjoying it and am weighing my options of how to go about doing this. I have a converted chest freezer that is being...

Plate Chiller and Warm Tap Water

I'm using a gravity fed setup, so recirculating isn't an option. I guess I'll try slowing the wort flow while keeping the water moving quickly. Thanks for the advice.

Plate Chiller and Warm Tap Water

@mgortel I'm using a gravity fed system, so recirculating isn't an option. I'll probably keep my water flow the same and slow the wort. Thanks!!

Plate Chiller and Warm Tap Water

Anyone have any suggestions about using a plate chiller with warmer tap water. I live in Los Angeles and our tap water is usually between 65 and 75 degrees. I brewed yesterday, 75 air temp and 72 water temp, and had trouble cooling the wort to the desired temp for pitching, 70 degrees. I ran the...

    Heat Loss From Mash Tun

Great info! I think I'll just preheat my MLT with some hot water next time. Don't know why I didn't think of that. I do it with my coffee mug every morning to keep my coffee hot longer! Thanks!!

    Excessive Boil Off

I'm in Los Angeles, so the humidity was around 90%. I'd assume high humidity = less boil off. It was probably a combination of things, but I might set up wind shield next time. Thanks for everyones help!!

    Heat Loss From Mash Tun

Brewed my first all grain batch yesterday, which went pretty well, but my mass ended up about 4 degrees to cold to start. I heated the strike water, compensating for the temperature of the grains, but not the mash tun (10 gallon Rubbermaid cooler) itself. The grains and MLT were sitting next to...

    Excessive Boil Off

Anyone had any issues with wind that lead to excessive boil off? I brew outside, and yesterday was a breezy brew day. I usually experience a 1 - 1.5 gallons per hour boil off. Yesterday was 2.25 gallons in an hour! OG was 1.054. Any thoughts?
