    Summer Shandy

When I was in Spain for a while, they had a drink that was very similar. They would mix their equivalent of a BMC half and half with lemon soda in the glass as they served it to you. I have to say it was very refreshing on a hot summer day, and it also had the effect of allowing you to forget...

    Improved boiling on the stovetop!

Does anyone use insulation on their kettles on a gas range or propane burner? I'd love to try this on my gas range, but not sure of what material to use. I am not familiar with the engine compartment insulation. Is it fiberglass or mineral wool based? I saw some fiberglass and mineral wool...

Using 2 burners for stovetop brewing & the distance apart

I use two burners but also use a Heat Stik. It is essentially a water heater element with a power cord attached. I can just barely get 6 gallons to a boil this way. I have a gas stove and let me say, it is no Viking.

    HomeBrew stores in NYC area?

The only one that I have been to is Brew Brothers by Kedco out in Farmingdale, Long Island. They had a pretty decent selection of stuff. They had bulk grain and they take special orders for bags of grain. Not sure how they handle shipping, though. I end up buying most of my stuff online.

Anyone Ever Added Black Peppercorn to a Brew?

Black pepper is also mentioned in Radical Brewing as a possible ingredient to use when making a rye beer to add a little more bite.

Using Rye - Cook it first?

Oh ok. I used malted rye and came out of the mash with decent efficiency so I figured everything was ok. Does raw rye have a different flavor than malted?

Using Rye - Cook it first?

I read in Randy Mosher's Radical Brewing that he recommends cooking or boiling the rye before using it in a mash. I just made a beer with about 20% rye and i just crushed it and threw it right in. The sparge stuck once or twice, but no huge problems. Why would you cook or boil the rye...

    Fermentor temperature controller

Thanks for the links, RadicalEd.:) The only TEC's that I have played with have been rated at 12V, and I have tried several from I think around 320W to 120W. I was using a 12V supply and the biggest factor in the heat removal proved to be the current running through the TEC's. I eventually got...

    Fermentor temperature controller

I'm happy you guys are working on this, as I have played with a few TEC's as well and they do seem to have some potential given a proper power supply and thermal connection to the fermenting wort. One thing that I haven't seen mentioned in your capacity calculations is the effect that the...

CO2 tank on Craigslist in Queens, NY - $35

http://newyork.craigslist.org/que/bfs/360032174.html The guy wants $35 for a used CO2 tank. I asked him how big it was and he said it measured 30" tall. Not sure how many pounds that is, but it's too big for my apartment. He also said the tank had been hydro tested in the last 2 years, so...

    Star San Sanitation ?

That's true...So i suppose the cost argument doesn't work, but for me, it just doesn't seem right pouring the fruits of my labor into a buch of acid bubbles. I know there is nothing wrong with it chemically, that there is just too little actual liquid in the bubbles to affect anything - just a...

    Star San Sanitation ?

I'm using Saniclean. It's the same ingredients as StarSan, but without the foaming agent. You use it the same way. It's even cheaper than StarSan at North Country Malt.

    Brews Brothers at KEDCO...been there?

Brews Brothers at KEDCO in Farmindale, Long Island, NY I'm thinking of driving out there this weekend from Brooklyn and was wondering if it was worth the drive. I was hoping to pick up a few brews worth of grain to save myself from shipping. Any reviews would be much appreciated. Thanks!
