    Stainless Steel CFC build

    1. more expensive. 2. I based my build on another user (his blog is down right now but here is the link) . He used JB weld instead of fittings because he jambed up the tubing while straightening the legs. becasue of the tightness, he couldn't get the fittings on. I figured I'd just skip to...

Ground fault caused by element dry-firing?

Just to close this out: I ordered a new element. After installation, i fired it up and all is well. For future reference, on the new element i still measured 10.3 ohm between the hot and neutral legs, and infinity to ground.

    Stainless Steel CFC build

so I recently built a CFC from SS tubing. I detailed the build here and testing here. In summary, I purchased the tubing and fixtures from stainlessbrewing.com. The coil is 25', terminated with stainless tee fittings and using bushings and JB Weld. total cost: $90.25, plus the cost of the...

Ground fault caused by element dry-firing?

I did. I could see no evidence of arc, everything was tight, no melted insulation, etc. I'd be very cautious of using something with melted insulation. At the very least, I'd add whatever extra insulation i could. Heat shrink would probably be the best bet.

Ground fault caused by element dry-firing?

Thank you. This is my assumption as well, but I'm not familiar with internal construction of heating elements and I can't seem to find a whole lot of examples of this particular failure mode. Curious if anyone else has experienced this? And yes, very thankful for the GFCI. Glad I had that in...

Ground fault caused by element dry-firing?

So i screwed up a cleaning session yesterday - inadvertantly left the discharge from my pump outside the kettle while running and heating, and walked away to make a sandwich. I came back and my rig had now power and no water... the GFCI/breaker had thrown. No beer was harmed - it was just...

SHOW OFF: Basement Brewery cleaning sinks

amazon. sink: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00M87C7WM, although I paid $250 for it. faucet: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B072BXCZVQ. If I had to do it over, I'd get one with a shorter spout. When I put a carboy in the sink, the spout is too long to be able to properly fill. Here is...

SHOW OFF: Basement Brewery cleaning sinks

I had to build out a wall against the concrete so I could attach the sink. I think it came out nice. no plans to finish the wall. I do like having space immediately behind the sink to store things like soap, sponges, tools, etc. I also like the rack immediately above that I can hang hoses...

recipe help: tart peach cobbler beer

My wife made a peach cobbler a few weeks ago that I can't get out of my head. Delicious. Part of what made it great is that the peaches were still a bit on the tart side - not overly sweet at all, very fresh tasting. I want to make a version of this in beer form. Obviously, I'm thinking it...

troubleshooting astringency in low ABV beer

it's not a good way to store hops. Traditionally, I don't brew hop-forward beers so I haven't paid much attention to hops, just getting the bulk stuff from LHBS. Maybe it's time to invest in a vaccuum sealer, buying from Yakima or someone else, and re-sealing/freezing what I don't use. On the...

troubleshooting astringency in low ABV beer

I'm lost. You basically mash the carafa special separately and don't include that wort in the boil?

troubleshooting astringency in low ABV beer

I added liquid acid to bring the pH down.

troubleshooting astringency in low ABV beer

It was an internal competition - I think there were just 7 entries. I still feel good because my beer finished ahead of some really great Brewers. The judges were all BJCP certified. Hops: stored @ LHBS in Tupperware containers in large fridge...not sealed packets. Water: I'm listing after...

troubleshooting astringency in low ABV beer

I recently brewed an ordinary bitter and entered it in a club competition. I took 2nd place, both judges rated it as a 32. One common note from both judges was astringency, which I can definitely taste. I'm trying to understand where it comes from. General recipe: Marris Otter: 6 lbs Special...
